Oakland Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson had an incredible rookie season, thanks to his unwavering faith in God.

“I think that having God on your side is everything, especially throughout life, but in the sport as well. Just being able to be an athlete, just pray, just be able to trust in Him every single day,” he told the Christian Broadcasting Network. in July.

When Wilson was searching for a college to attend, he knew he wanted a place where his faith would be a priority.

“I really wanted to find a place that put God first and continue my relationship growing with Jesus,” he told Grand Canyon University, the college Wilson ultimately attended.

Another reason Wilson has done so well in his rookie season is because of his father, former MLB star Jack Wilson, “who played 12 seasons with three different teams. Of all the wisdom that’s been offered over the years, the message that stuck with the younger Wilson the most is a very basic one,” Sports Spectrum reported.

“His main thing he always preached to me was just go out there and have fun,” Wilson shared, talking about his father on the MLB Network. “Don’t think too much. Obviously, you think about so much stuff when you’re hitting — your stance, your mechanics, just whatever is going on.”

This season, Wilson has a .318 batting average, which “ranks second among qualified players, trailing only New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge.”

He made his MLB debut last season, a moment he would never forget.

“My MLB Debut. I’m so thankful for all my family and friends who made this day one i will never forget. I’m so blessed to be able to start this journey and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Let’s get to work,” Wilson wrote on social media.

In his rookie year, Wilson was part of the 2025 All-Star Game.

“I couldn’t be more grateful for the experience and the people who were a part of it. Time to get the second half started!” he shared, along with several photos from his weekend.

He hit his 13th home run over the weekend and looks to continue fighting for Oakland as the last two weeks of the regular season wrap up. It is unlikely the Athletics will make it to the playoffs, but for Wilson, his faith in God is what gives him peace amid disappointments.
