Two years ago, Ty Pennington underwent an emergency surgery to remove an abscess in his throat that restricted his breathing; it has since helped him live his life to the fullest.

“That was so crazy. It’s one of those freak things that could happen to anybody, but it’s crazy how risky it was,” Pennington said. “It definitely shed light on how important it is to stay healthy for others. I am definitely on top of that, and I am taking care of myself. When you have have pets in your life, you’re happier and you take better care of yourself.”

In July 2023, Pennington was admitted into the ICU when doctors found a large abscess in his throat that was significantly restricting his breathing.

“Tuesday morning, I woke up at 4am and could barely breathe ?,” he shared in an Instagram post after the scare. “Turns out, that sore throat I’ve had for the last month was actually an abscess which had grown so large it was closing off my airway. Next thing I know, I was intubated and flown to the ICU in Denver. Wednesday I had surgery and yesterday afternoon I was released from the ICU.”

As he enters the later years of his life, this health scare has helped the HGTV host realize that every day on this earth is a blessing.

“It made me realize you just don’t know when your timecard’s gonna get pulled, so wake up, live every single day to the fullest,” he said. “I mean that’s why the 60s is gonna be like time to start doing everything and that’s what I love about being part of these projects because I think we all want to make sure we’ve done things to be remembered.”

Pennington has certainly lived this out, as he has ramped up his schedule in the two years since, booting up another HGTV original show while also launching a home renovation video game based on his hit show EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION.

“[The health scare] was one of the best experiences…because you got to survive it, but you realized how much you’re worth to other people and how much you would be missed,” Pennington said earlier this year. “Honestly, I think we should all go through something like that to really appreciate the people that love you, because sometimes we take that for granted. And I think that’s also what a home is like. You forget how important that is to our lives and when it’s gone, you know sometimes we all — and I think recently, especially here in LA — it’s a reality that things we take for granted could be taken away.”

While this experience could have left Pennington scared, instead, it has fired him up to make the most of his life. It is amazing to see where he has gone from there as he looks to capitalize on the rest of his life.
