Former child star and singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus opened up about her decision to get sober.

“Well, I like showing up 100%, 100% of the time,” she told CBS News. “The hardest part about balancing, you know, any sort of substance use or drinking when you want to do what I do is you’re going, ‘Okay, well, now I have to get sober for this thing, ’cause I wanna show up my best.’ And now, I get to trim out so much of the preparation of getting yourself into the right place mentally and physically. I’m just always ready.”

The singer stopped using marijuana in 2017 and cut out alcohol in 2020.

Cyrus shared that she has an “authentic joy” in what she’s doing now as an artist, adding, “I feel really good. And I really like who I am, and I like what I’m doing with my life.”

In an Apple Music interview, she said, “I’ve learned this about myself over the years. The sobriety is like…I need it, I live for it. I mean that it’s changed my entire life.”

In another recent interview with CR Fashion Book, Cyrus explained that gardening has been a major part of maintaining her sobriety.

“Gardening is something you do for yourself,” she said. “When we’ve shared so much of ourselves, having those little precious times with something simple — like putting a seed in the ground and nurturing it — it becomes a very personal process.”

Cyrus continued, “Having that has been the medicine that’s kept me grounded in my sober lifestyle. It’s part of a practice, the way yoga might be: getting out into nature, doing something with my hands, and having a creative outlet that isn’t about fame or success.”

The artist has also been open about how honoring her sobriety is part of the reason why she has largely stopped touring.

“I do have the physical ability and I have the opportunity to tour. I wish I had the desire, but I don’t,” she told GOOD MORNING AMERICA. “There’s artists like Prince that are not here today that lived such a high intensity lifestyle on the road. It’s really hard to maintain sobriety on the road, which is a really important pillar of stability in my life.”

Cyrus’ commitment to her sobriety is inspiring and a reminder that there is no career success that is more important than your own health.
