Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert opened up about their previous struggles with fertility in honor of Pregnancy and Infant Loss and Awareness Month.
“There are some things in life that change you forever. For use, this is one of those things. A chapter of love, loss, heartbreak, and everything in between. As we are now in October, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, we share this part of our story to honor our baby that never made it earthside,” the couple wrote in a dual Instagram post.
“One in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, a silent heartbreak so many families know, and one we unfortunately had to experience,” the post continued. “As we share this, know that there’s a rainbow not far behind. ♥️🌈”

In the post, the couple shared multiple videos from their first pregnancy, which ended in a miscarriage, where they shared the good news with their friends and family. At the end of the video, they include a clip where they learn about the devastating news.
While this chapter of their life is heartbreaking, they were able to announce good news earlier this summer, when they revealed that they were pregnant.
“We can’t believe the biggest thing to happen to us could be so small ♥️,” the couple wrote on a joint post in July.
As the pregnancy has continued, they have become even more excited to become parents. In September, Hough shared the joy he has experienced throughout the pregnancy as he inches ever closer to becoming a dad.
“Sometimes I like, I forget, right. I’m doing things, and I just glance over there and I see her bump, [and] I’m like, ‘Whoa.’ I’m like, ‘I’m gonna be a dad.’ And I cannot wait. I cannot wait,” Hough said while on THE JENNIFER HUDSON SHOW, per PEOPLE.
“I felt the baby kick for the first time, and it was that feeling that everybody talks about and describes, where all of a sudden everything became vivid and different,” He added. “And I’m like, ‘Whoa, I’m going to be something I’ve never [been]. I’m going to feel something I’ve never experienced before yet.’ And, I just can’t wait. I can’t wait.”
While their path to parenthood has not been easy, it is amazing to see just how excited Hough and Hayley are to become parents. Praise the Lord for the way He has moved in their lives to allow them this opportunity after facing such deep heartbreak.
