Worship Artist Hopes His First Acting Role Inspires Families to Stand Boldly for God

Phil Wickham expanded his talents when he took on the role of David in Angel’s new “cinematic musical,” DAVID.

“It was a dream I never chased, and I never thought it would become reality,” the worship singer told Crosswalk Headlines of his first acting role.

The movie, from Angel Studios, reimagines the life of David, “one of history’s most iconic heroes — a shepherd boy who stood against a giant and changed the course of nations.”

“From the songs of his mother’s heart to the whispers of a faithful God, David’s story begins in quiet devotion. When the giant Goliath rises to terrorize a nation, a young shepherd armed with only a sling, a few stones, and unshakable faith steps forward. Pursued by power and driven by purpose, his journey tests the limits of loyalty, love, and courage — culminating in a battle not just for a crown, but for the soul of a kingdom,” a synopsis of the movie reads.

Wickham hopes that families will leave the theater inspired to take a stand for God.

“[I hope] they leave the theater and they want to turn on a soundtrack [that is] full of the story of God and full of Psalms and full of hallelujah and faith and hope – and then turn on the movie later and dance around the living room while they’re listening to it and they’re watching it,” he said. “… I think this movie will last decades, I think it will be something our grandkids watch.”

Wickham also spoke with CCM Magazine about the impact this particular story and biblical figure have had on his life.

“There are few men that have had a greater impact on my life than King David. His story, his songs, and his faith have shaped me deeply,” he said. “What an honor it has been to help bring this character to life! It truly has been a dream come true that I never saw coming. Finding David’s voice inside of me was both a challenge and a joy — thanks to an amazing team who helped guide the way! I’m so proud to be a part of such a beautiful and life-giving film. I believe it will fill hearts with hope, and lift eyes to Heaven for many years to come.”
