Rapper and singer Nicki Minaj took a stand against the violence happening against Christians in Nigeria and all around the world in a Nov. 18 United Nations address.

“In Nigeria, Christians are being targeted, driven from their homes and killed,” she told the UN, per an Evie Magazine Instagram post. “Churches have been burned. Families have been torn apart, and entire communities live in fear constantly, simply because of how they pray.”

She continued, “Sadly, this problem is not only a growing problem in Nigeria, but also in so many other countries across the world, and it demands urgent action. And I want to be clear, protecting Christians in Nigeria is not about taking sides or dividing people. It is about uniting humanity.”

People in the comment section applauded Minaj for speaking out on the issue.

“Bless her! She is using her voice, and her platform to bring awareness to a cause that all too often gets swept under the rug. I pray for her continued courage, and for her safety❤️🙏🏻” one person said.

Another person added, “Never expected Nicki Minaj to be someone I stand with but lately everything I’ve been seeing about her is 🔥”

In another part of the speech, Minaj thanked President Donald Trump for his efforts to stop this genocide.

“Music has taken me around the globe. I have seen how people, no matter their language, culture or religion come alive when they hear a song that touches their soul,” she said. “Religious freedom means we all can sing our faith regardless of who we are, where we live, and what we believe. But today, faith is under attack in way too many places.”

She concluded with his life’s mission statement: “It’s about what I’ve always stood for my entire career, and I will continue to stand for that for the rest of my life.”

Minaj isn’t the only celebrity condemning the genocide taking place in Nigeria. Recently comedian Bill Maher spoke out about the atrocities.

“[T]he fact that this issue has not gotten on people’s radar, it’s pretty amazing,” he said. “If you don’t know what’s going on in Nigeria, your media sources suck; you are in a bubble.”

Maher added, “I’m not a Christian, but they are systematically killing the Christians in Nigeria. They’ve killed over a hundred thousand since 2009. They’ve burned 18,000 churches. These are the Islamists, Boko Haram. This is so much more of a genocide attempt than what is going on in Gaza. They are literally attempting to wipe out the Christian population of an entire country.”

Matthew 5:10 reminds us, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Let us also pray for those who are persecuted, both in Nigeria and throughout the world.
