Actor Milo Ventimiglia was honored and humbled to portray singer-songwriter Tim Timmons in I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2.
Ventimiglia said, “This wasn’t about a movie. This wasn’t about even telling a story. This was ‘Oh, wow, I’m given a moment in life to connect with another human being and his story and know him and become like lifelong friends from this…’ For me, it’s about my friend.”
“On the business, acting front, the art of it, my responsibility is to honor this man,” he explained. “To make sure that his story is told the way he would want it to be told, not to mimic, not to impersonate, but to exist as him on camera to where people are feeling what he feels every day of his real life.”
On SHERRI, Ventimiglia told the talk show host, Sherri Shepherd, how he admires Timmons.
“I’m gonna know him the rest of my life,” the actor said. “If the movie never happened, just to be friends with Tim, I’m like, ‘Cool, I’m grateful for that.”

In another interview, Timmons shared that the first time he met Ventimiglia was over Zoom during the Palisades fires.
“Forty-five minutes into it, the hills behind my house were on fire,” Ventimiglia recalled. “Tim said to me, ‘Bro, you gotta go.’”
Then Ventimiglia and his wife, who was nine months pregnant, immediately vacated their house.
“[We] lost the house that day,” he said. “Two weeks later, our daughter was born and I had this task in front of me of wow, this is eerie but the themes and concepts of the movie with, you know, grief and gratitude, are exactly where I’m living right now.”
I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2 tells the story of how Timmons joins MercyMe as Bart Millard repairs his relationship with his son, Sam.
Part of Movieguide®’s review of the movie reads, “I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2 is a beautiful, powerful, wonderfully acted movie of faith and family. The movie has many dramatic, emotional, uplifting moments,” and “The musical interludes beautifully portray the story’s high points, character arcs and spiritual themes.”
“All these elements reflect a strong Christian, moral worldview,” the review continues. “I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2 contains some great musical interludes. It gratifyingly surpasses the original movie’s emotional, uplifting, redemptive Christian themes and values.”
The movie is available to watch in theaters as of Feb. 20.
