More Detail:
Ever since they discovered their eldest son, Sammy, has diabetes, Bart Millard, the lead singer of the popular Christian band Mercy Me, has been concerned about his son’s health. However, as Sam became older and reached his teenage years, Bart has been a hard taskmaster, making sure Sam remembers to take his insulin shots. When Sam forgets, Bart tends to become more angry than loving and supportive. Bart’s anger has created a gulf between him and Sam, and Bart fears that he’s acting more like his father before Bart led him to Jesus.
Making matters worse, Bart is having trouble coming up with a follow-up to the group’s hit song, “I Can Only Imagine.” Bart’s writing block is becoming a strain on the band’s big upcoming tour, a tour that may decide whether the band deserves to be a headline act anymore.
Bart’s wife, Shannon, encourages Bart him to take Sam on the tour with him. Sam is a natural musician. His guitar skills are increasing by the day.
Meanwhile, Mercy Me’s manager, Scott Brickle, has hired a new singer, Tim Timmons, to be Mercy Me’s opening act on the tour. Tim is inspired by the story of the composer behind the popular hymn, “It Is Well with My Soul,” who suffered a great tragedy yet wrote a tremendous song about being grateful and trusting in Jesus Christ, who shed His blood for our souls. Tim wants to write a song like that which helps people.
As the tour continues, Tim brings a renewed sense of gratitude to Bart and Sam’s lives. Tim also helps mentor Sam, giving the boy a new inner strength. However, when Bart discovers that Tim carries his own severe challenge, Bart relies upon his healed relationship with his own late father to repair his relationship with Sam.
