for KING & COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone recently shared the “cinematic concert experience” he and brother Luke are bringing to audiences this Christmas with A DRUMMER BOY CHRISTMAS.

“We love Christmas,” Joel told Movieguide®. “We love the Christmas story, we love these incredibly nostalgic, beautiful Christmas songs…When we arrived in the States, the first Christmas we ever had here, it snowed…so, it’s very apropos that, as musicians, we would celebrate this season by going on tour.”

The singer explained that, even though he and Luke enjoy putting on Christmas concerts, the holiday season is so short and they can’t play in all the cities they want to hit — which is where the idea for a concert movie came in.

“We took the film crew from UNSUNG HERO and we put them in the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas,” Joel said, referring to the 2024 movie the brothers made about their family. “It was the last show of the tour…and we captured this cinematic concert experience.”

He also shared his favorite Christmas songs to perform live, shouting out “Little Drummer Boy” — “Obviously,” Joel joked — and “Silent Night.”

“I just was always so mesmerized by the meaning and, you know, the idea of Jesus being the light of the world,” he said of the song.

for KING & COUNTRY are also playing a series of Christmas shows in cities across America, which marks the end of the band’s performing hiatus.

“We were in London promoting UNSUNG HERO when we said, ‘What if we take a year off touring?’” Joel told The Christian Post. “I said to [Luke] the other day, I think we’re going to look back on this time away and recognize it was one of the most important things we ever did as a duo, just recalibrating.”

He added that the brothers have “discovered things” during this time off, but that they’re ready to get back onstage for the Christmas concerts.

“It’s like this grand reset every year,” he explained. “That there is forgiveness, redemption, love, hope, and joy and that there is this baby that literally flips the world on its head…it’s pivotal to our humanity.”

In a press release about the “Drummer Boy Christmas” concert dates, the Smallbones said, “To celebrate the miracle of all miracles, God coming to earth and offering redemption, and experiencing it together, makes this our favorite tour of the year. We can’t wait to see you all this December.”
