Apple TV+ and Legendary Entertainment announced they would be expanding the Monsterverse with a new TV show starring Wyatt Russell that will serve as a prequel and explore Lee Shaw’s early life.

“I could not feel more privileged to be a part of building out this wildly iconic universe,” said showrunner Joby Harold, who is creating the prequel. “Apple and Legendary have been exemplary partners throughout this process, and we will continue to bring these Titans of cinematic history to audiences with the reverence they deserve.”

“Joby is a remarkable storyteller with a deep understanding of what makes the Monsterverse resonate with fans globally,” added Jason Clodfelter, Legendary TV’s president and managing director. “We’re thrilled to bring him and Safehouse Pictures into a broader partnership alongside Apple, marking an exciting new era for the franchise.”

Apple TV+ currently serves as the home of the TV show MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS which takes place between GODZILLA (2014) and GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, as well as the mainline Monsterverse movies. While production on the Lee Shaw prequel is only just beginning and has yet to be given a release date, fans are eagerly awaiting season two of MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS which will release next February.

“Viewers around the world haven’t been able to get enough of MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS since its global debut, and we cannot wait to unleash the electrifying new stories that Joby and the entire cast and creative team have been working on,” said Morgan Wandell, head of international development for Apple TV. “With Joby at the helm, and alongside our terrific partners at Legendary, this new spinoff will kick off an epic Monsterverse expansion that brings audiences even closer to their favorite Titans, along with fantastic character-driven storytelling.”

The franchise also has a movie coming in 2027 to continue to major storylines that previous movies have explored: GODZILLA X KONG: SUPERNOVA. The previous Monsterverse movie was a smash hit at the box office, grossing $572 million at the global box office. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

GODZILLA X KONG takes a while to expose the new villain and what’s really happening in Hollow Earth. However, there’s lots of exciting action before those revelations occur, and afterwards. GODZILLA X KONG has a strong moral worldview. The story’s goals are to protect human civilization and restore a fallen kingdom. GODZILLA X KONG also promotes the love between a mother and her adopted daughter. It’s marred, however, by lots of mostly light foul language and intense, scary violence featuring giant monsters.

Fans of the Monsterverse have much to look forward to in the near future as they not only have a movie on the horizon but two shows also in the pipeline for Apple TV+.
