With the NFL Draft just days away, University of Texas safety Michael Taaffe holds tight to his faith and community.
“I think community is really important. I’ve got a really good Bible study leader. He’s a source for me to just let out all my emotions and just let out what the Lord is placing on my heart right then and there,” the safety told Sports Spectrum at the Senior Bowl in January.
Taaffe also shared that consistently reading the Bible is his source of strength.

“And so I would say community number one, but also just being consistent in the Word, you know,” he said. “I’ve failed at times. I’ve been good at times. But right now I’m reading a book by Tim Keller talking about the Galatians, and it’s been really cool to see that the freedom of Christ is what Galatians talks about. And so just being free in Christ and knowing that you can’t put too much pressure on this, because Christ has set you free.”
In December, Taaffe declared for the NFL Draft. Before he made that announcement, he wrote a heartfelt letter to everyone who helped him on his journey at Texas.
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve bled burnt orange and white. I have given my absolute all to the University of Texas, and I am grateful for every part of my journey so far,” the safety wrote. “The highs and lows all played a part in shaping the story y’all have helped me write!”
He then credited Christ for the opportunity to play at Texas.
“I would like to start by giving thanks to our savior, Jesus Christ, for without Him, this game and my journey would not have been possible,” he continued. “Secondly, I’d like to thank my family for the endless support and the grind we went through together to get to this point. To all my coaches at the University of Texas, thank you for taking a chance on me and giving me an opportunity to play for my dream school. I am forever grateful for the opportunity that y’all gave me.”
“To Longhorn nation, from the moment I stepped on campus, y’all have given me the support system any player would die for,” Taaffe added. “I did everything I could to make this University better than I found it and give y’all something to be proud of every Saturday in the fall. My memories are not my memories without y’all cheering on the burnt orange every weekend.”
The Draft will take place later this month, where Taafe will wait patiently for his name to be called. No matter what happens on draft day, Taaffe’s foundation is firm in his identity in Christ, and he will lean on the word of God and his community of friends and family.
