What You Need To Know:
MILK is extremely well made and brilliantly acted by Sean Penn. The emotion is strong, the story compelling, and the directing is very powerful. All the elements of a well-made movie come together to make this movie very moving. It’s a movie that chronicles a piece of history, but it is filled with anti-God sentiments in a strong humanist context, especially in reaction to comments against homosexuality made by Christian celebrity Anita Bryant. There is also plenty of foul language, brief nudity and many scenes of homosexual characters in bed together. MILK clearly pushes a politically correct agenda.

(HH, PCPCPC, HoHoHo, ABAB, LLL, VV, SSS, NN, A, DD, M) Strong humanist worldview mixed with very strong politically correct pro-homosexual content (including some crude elements), as well as many anti-God and anti-Christian statements; 27 obscenities (mostly “f” words and including some obscene slang for male private parts), four profanities and vulgar slang for homosexuals; man shoots another man point blank with slow motion of the death, man shoots another man off-screen and man hangs himself; multiple scenes of homosexual kissing, men in bed together, and two men playfully “wrestle” naked, but in low light; rear and upper male nudity in scene where two nude men playfully “wrestle,” rear male nudity in photo and upper male nudity elsewhere; alcohol use; smoking cigarettes and marijuana use; and, lying.

MILK is the true story of Harvey Milk, who was the first openly homosexual man to hold public office as a Supervisor in San Fransciso in the late 1970s.
As Milk speaks into a tape recorder, he recounts his rise to office and the changes he was able to bring about in the culture. He opens up a camera shop in the early 1970s in San Francisco and quickly begins to advocate for homosexual rights. This leads him to run for public office. After two unsuccessful attempts, he becomes a Supervisor.
During this tumultuous time, others, including Anita Bryant, were vocal in attempting to stop legislation in different states over the issues of “gay rights.” Fellow Supervisor Dan White becomes jealous of Milk’s success and resigns. The next day, he changes his mind and tries to get his job back. Milk convinces the Mayor to not let him back since White often voted against Milk’s legislation. When he is not hired back, White sneaks a gun into the capitol building and shoots and kills both Mayor Moscone and Harvey Milk.
Milk becomes a martyr for the cause, and the homosexual community rallies together even more strongly after his death.

The message of the movie is able to be “delivered” effortlessly by such a well crafted story and performances. That message is politically charged, holding Milk up as a martyr of the “gay rights” movement. However, the movie itself shows that White’s motivation for murder was being upset about not getting his job back, not because Milk was a homosexual. White comes off as a troubled man who feels like a failure and takes it out on Milk and Mayor Moscone.
MILK tells a very poignant story and tells it very well. It’s a movie that chronicles a piece of history and perhaps helps us understand our own times better. However, it is filled with anti-God sentiments, especially in reaction to comments made by Anita Bryant (who only appears in the movie via archive news footage). There is also plenty of strong foul language, some brief nudity and many scenes of homosexual characters in bed together. The humanist, anti-Christian worldview of MILK pushes a politically correct agenda with excessively obscene content.
