What You Need To Know:

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is the story of Dale, who witnesses a murder by a drug lord. Then, Dale, along with his personal drug dealer, Saul, must flee henchmen and crooked cops. They learn that the thugs are really after them because they had a rare type of marijuana called “Pineapple Express,” which Dale dropped when witnessing the murder. Saul and Dale try to protect Dale’s high school aged girlfriend and her family from the thugs. Along the way, there are numerous fights, car chases and a big action finish at the underground marijuana lab.

The point of PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, based on an opening flashback scene, seems to be that the decision to make marijuana illegal has created the criminal industry of drug trafficking. The antics of the characters while high are the basis for the movie’s plot and comedy. However, there is a moment when Dale tells Saul that they have to stop smoking marijuana and think straight if they want to avoid the henchmen. However, there is no observable change in their behavior after that. Sexual innuendo, including a crude homosexual reference, permeates the movie, which is filled with abundant obscenities.

Content:

(HH, PaPa, Ho, Ab, B, LLL, VV, SS, N, DDD, M) Strong humanist worldview with strong pagan behavior, including crude homosexual reference and a couple anti-Christian elements (such as creating a marijuana cigarette in the shape of a cross and at least one crude reference to God) along with a light message at one point that being high all the time wastes your life; at least 183 obscenities and seven profanities, and at least two blasphemies about God and Jesus Christ; extended fist fights, car chase and crash sequences, multiple shootings with machines guns, explosions, character stabbed with fork, character bites off another’s ear, foot stuck in windshield; strong sexual elements include “comedy” sequence of two male characters who mimic sodomy, “comedy” imitates oral sex, much verbal sexual innuendo, vulgar name for male and female body parts; upper male nudity, male in underwear; no alcohol; characters addicted to marijuana, with constant use and glorification of marijuana smoking, plus selling and buying illegal drugs; and, attempted murder and police on drug lord’s payroll.

More Detail:

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is the story of Dale (played by Seth Rogen), who witnesses a murder by a drug lord and, then, along with his personal drug dealer Saul (played by James Franco), must flee henchmen and crooked cops. They learn that the thugs are really after them because Saul sold Dale a rare type of marijuana called “Pineapple Express” which Dale dropped when witnessing the murder. Saul and Dale next head over to attempt to protect Dale’s high school aged girlfriend and her family from the thugs who may come after them. Complicating the plot is that the drug lord’s rival, a Chinese drug cartel, sets out to stop the drug lord, and Dale and Saul are literally in the middle of that battle. Along the way, there are numerous fist fights, car chases and a big action finish at the underground marijuana lab.

This movie is billed as a ‘stoner action movie’ and does deliver on both counts. The characters are addicted to marijuana and are high for most of the movie. The action is solid and is a good blend of believable action and slapstick comedy. The story involves the viewer and the production quality is good on all counts.

However, the content of the movie is disturbing. The whole point of the movie, based on an opening flashback scene, seems to be that the decision to make marijuana illegal has created the criminal industry of drug trafficking. There is conversation advocating the legalization of marijuana. The antics of the characters while high are the basis of the plot and the comedy. However, there is a moment when Dale tells Saul that they have to stop smoking marijuana and think straight if they want to avoid the henchmen who are after them. However, there is no observable change in their behavior after that.

While there are no sex scenes, sexual innuendo permeates the dialogue and there are “comedy” beats that mimic homosexual sex. The filmmakers have a track record of making vulgar, obscene movies. PINEAPPLE EXPRESS continues their trend. While there are some funny moments and the storyline of a character being at the wrong place at the wrong time is always a strong story, the movie’s offensive content negates the possibility of receiving any overall commendation. In fact, the dialogue has an abnormally high amount of obscene language, which matches the obscene storyline.
