5 Celebrities to Pray for During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

By Tess Farrand, Staff Writer

Every year, October commemorates breast cancer survivors and reflects on those whose lives were taken by the disease, or those who are currently battling it. Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in the United States and research continues to investigate new treatment protocols and avenues for a cure.

Many people need prayer for healing, including our own family members and friends. Lots of individuals in Hollywood also find their lives turned upside down by a cancer diagnosis. Some have a personal relationship with Jesus, but others do not. Either way, all need prayer for healing, both physically and spiritually.

Here are five well-known individuals in Hollywood you can pray for while we’re in Breast Cancer Awareness month.

  1. Olivia Newton-John

This singer/actress revealed late last year that she was diagnosed with cancer for the third time. The GREASE alum has experienced remission on and off since 1992 and is optimistic about her healing journey ahead.

  1. Jo Dee Messina (pictured above)

The “Heads Carolina, Tails California” singer revealed last year that she was diagnosed with cancer. Although she remains quiet on the type of cancer, Messina looks to God to guide her during these rocky waters. In an interview with PEOPLE, Messina encourages readers, “It doesn’t change the fact that God is good.” Just last week, the country star released her rendition of the worship song, “Reckless Love.”

  1. Sandra Lee

The Food Network Hostess, Sandra Lee is currently in remission after learning she had early signs of breast cancer in 2015. In response to the news, Lee underwent a bilateral mastectomy and engaged in conversations the importance of screenings to her boyfriend, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. This prompted him to make screening hours and insurance barriers more accessible to women. Lee’s journey of health is the subject of a new HBO documentary called, RX: EARLY DETECTION- A CANCER JOURNEY WITH SANDRA LEE. Lee spoke of her mentality going forward, stating, “The biggest thing I can do is really show people what it looks like to go through this so they walk in with open eyes—which I did not have.” She continued, “We’re all human. It’s most important that we help each other.”

  1. Julia Louis-Dreyfus

At the close of 2017, the SEINFELD and VEEP star learned of her stage-two breast cancer diagnosis. The Washington Post sat down with the star to give her take on her diagnosis, “You know what, I can’t quite answer that, because I feel like I’m still a little bit in the throes of it.”

  1. Dame Maggie Smith

The British actress is popular for her recent roles on DOWNTON ABBEY and HARRY POTTER, as well as older movies CALIFORNIA SUITE and GOSFORD PARK. At the Age of 74, Smith found a lump in her breast that caused her pause. While filming the sixth installment of HARRY POTTER, Smith learned of her diagnosis. “It kind of takes the wind out of your sails, and I don’t know what the future holds, if anything. I don’t think there’s a lot of it, because of my age — there just isn’t. It’s all been. I’ve no idea what there will be,” Smith said.

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)
