Bring some joy to your holiday festivities this year with these seven fun Thanksgiving traditions.

Host a Themed Thanksgiving

If you want something new and fun, try having a themed Thanksgiving dinner. “One year, go back in time with classic recipes and vintage decorations. with classic recipes and throwback aesthetic. The next, make it modern with contemporary trimmings and a trendy tablescape,” TODAY shares.

Guests can dress up according to the theme or each bring a fun themed food.

Play Thanksgiving Games

Play board games, trivia or outdoor games. Play Hacky Sack. Have a ping-pong marathon or have your own family Thanksgiving Olympics — the winner gets a Turkey leg!

Take a Drive Through the Foliage

Fall is beautiful in many places throughout America. Plan to take a walk or a drive through a leafy area near you before sunset. It will add a little peace to the hustle and bustle of the day. Breathe in that crisp air, listen to the rustle of the leaves and slow down and soak it in. You won’t regret it!

Have a Food Decorating Contest

“We eat first with our eyes,” as the saying goes. So, for a potluck style Thanksgiving, ask everyone to bring a decorative food. This could be something like a maple-leaf shaped cake, turkey-shaped bread rolls, a beautifully decorated pie or some other creative bites. Have everyone vote and give a prize to the winner.

Wear Your PJs All Day

Who doesn’t like to wear comfy pajamas all day? No one. “0 Guilt. 0 judgement. Just no getting dressed,” jokes food and travel journalist Marti Buckley. Plus, if everyone gets themed pajamas, those make for great family photos.

Have a Gratitude Tablecloth

The Pioneer Woman writer Erin Cavato has a great idea for families to practice gratitude. The going around the table thing where people each say what they’re grateful for is nice, but not very creative.

Erin says, “Start with a plain cotton tablecloth and a set of fabric markers. Each guest signs, doodles, or adds a tiny note about what they’re grateful for and the year. Over time it becomes a story‑filled heirloom that’ll make you smile every November!”

Video Call Those Who Can’t Attend

Maybe you can’t get everyone together, but you can still find a way to share the love by video-calling those who aren’t around the table with you. Things can get busy and hectic on holidays, so make sure you set aside some time for it!
