THE ROOKIE has changed its format for Season 8.
Rather than its previous case-of-the-week format, the new season is more serialized, with more simultaneous narratives at play, Screen Rant’s Ana Dumarog reported.
Dumarog said some episodes feel as though the cases are on the back burner while character story arcs come into the foreground.
“The list includes the ongoing Liam Glasser saga, which recently ended with the culprit getting free,” she said. “Meanwhile, the show’s longest-running and most notorious villain, Oscar Hutchinson, continues to terrorize Nolan. He remains to be at large, which means that he can return anytime in the foreseeable future to wreak more havoc.”

There’s also Lucy Chen’s close call with death, Miles Penn’s ongoing training and what Bailey Nune has been up to.
Tim Bradford and Lucy are a popular couple on the show. Last week, Deadline asked Eric Winter, who plays Tim, if Tim and Lucy might get married in the future.
“Oh, wow,” Winter said. “Tim and Lucy are definitely still building in a positive way. They’ve overcome a ton, and I think what we’re going to see throughout the season is how they continue to navigate this work-life balance.”
“I would say they’re getting to a really good place in their relationship, there’s some positive movement in a direction that I think they’re seeing each other, obviously they moved in with each other,” he said. “So what I can say is that they’re in a really positive place.”
Nuptials might be a natural progression for the cop couple.
“I think Tim has learned from his mistakes. He’s in it for the long haul, and wants to build a future, and sees that future. Will he get the courage to do it is one thing, and to dive back in with somebody at work to that level and take it to the next step, I think, is something he’ll wrestle with,” the actor continued. “But I think he’s excited to consider that for sure.”
Thought not confirmed, THE ROOKIE expected to continue for another season, however it’s likely to face budget cuts. Other ABC shows will have cuts, too, including 9-1-1, HIGH POTENTIAL, GREY’S ANATOMY, 9-1-1: NASHVILLE, SHIFTING GEARS, WILL TRENT and ABBOT ELEMENTARY. The budget cuts could mean that THE ROOKIE gets a fewer number of episodes than its regular 18 count.
The show has always done well for ABC. Season 8’s premiere had the biggest viewership in the show’s history and was one of ABC’s to five all-time series premieres. The new format may be playing in its favor, too.
Hopefully, THE ROOKIE Season 9 will get an official greenlight soon.
