Former NFL Star Explains Why ‘It’s Not Hard to Live for the Lord’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Former NFL player, speaker and author Benjamin Watson is encouraging others to share the gospel, even with those who might not agree with their beliefs.

“I think that people want to be liked, they want to be respected, but most of all, people want to see people that are authentic,” Watson said during an episode of the “Sports Spectrum” podcast. “I think, for me, it’s really about seeking a level of humility.”

He continued, “There’s always people that say, ‘I don’t agree with you, but thank you for taking a stand on this and making me think. Thank you for presenting an alternative viewpoint that might not be mainstream, but I can respect you because I know that you are sincere in what you are saying.’”

He explained that “we are called” to align our lives “with what we see in the counsel of God in scripture.”

“If we know the truth and we believe it, how can we not share it?” Watson asked. “How can we not devote ourselves to it? It’s not hard to live for the Lord if you know that there’s power in the gospel and you know the truth of the scripture. It’s not hard to do.”

He concluded, “We need each other and, you know, if not me, then who?”

One of the topics Watson is most outspoken about is the pro-life movement.

“I believe that the human person, starting from fertilization or conception to natural death, bears the image of God,” he explained. “I believe that every person has inherent value, whether they are liberal or conservative. Whether they come from any sort of ethnic background or any socio-economic status.”

Watson continued, “When we start from the place of people having inherent dignity and value, then it allows us to engage with people that we don’t agree with in a way that is empathetic, in a way that is respectful.”

“Everybody was delighted to have him there,” co-star Priscilla Shirer told Forbes. “He’s such an easy person to work with and be around. I think everybody enjoyed that.”

Watson added that he is “open” to being in more movies, “depending on the role, depending on the movie.”

“If there’s a film out there that has a message that is positive and uplifting and kind of challenges people, sure, I’d love to be part of it,” he said.
