Grammy Award-winning artist Brandon Lake knows why Christian music’s popularity is growing: “there’s a greater level of hunger for what’s real.”
“People are desperate for something that is going to lift their spirit, you know, and give them faith to get through another day. And I don’t know anything more true than what we’re singing about,” Lake told Billboard in a recent interview.
The singer grew up in a church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Without that church, Lake doesn’t know where he would be in life.
“There’s a scripture that talks about a tree that is planted by streams of water — it’s one that’ll flourish. And that’s what the church has been for me,” he said. “It’s not only been my upbringing, but it’s my constant. I feel called to be faithful to the church and to continue to exercise my gifts in the church and to serve and to love on people, because it’s changed my life. And it’s probably the easiest opportunity for me to help influence other people and change their life.”
Lake recently released his album, King Of Hearts, and announced a deluxe version of the album that features eight additional tracks.
“I’m not sure if I knew who this record was for when I started writing it, but as the songs came the more I realized it was not for the seemingly put together, but rather those who are honest about their brokenness, but also have a desire to connect with their Creator and experience Him in everyday life,” Lake wrote in a post on Instagram.
“This creator is King of the universe, King of Nations, King of creation, but none more important than King of hearts,” he added.
Lake’s track “Hard Fought Hallelujah,” which features country star Jelly Roll, went platinum before the record’s release.
“Can’t believe Hard Fought Hallelujah went platinum before this record even dropped. YOU made this possible,” Lake wrote on Instagram as he presented Jelly Roll with a plaque of the platinum album.
