BREAKTHROUGH Producer Announces Project About Gospel Music Icon Kirk Franklin

By Tess Farrand, Associate Editor

Christian recording artist and gospel music icon Kirk Franklin will soon see his life story on the big screen.

DeVon Franklin (no relation), the multiple MOVIEGUIDE® Award-winning producer and author, will spearhead the project.

DeVon’s most recent project, the faith-based movie BREAKTHROUGH, was released in theaters this spring during Easter and did well at the box office. Franklin previously produced the MOVIEGUIDE® Epiphany Prize® winners HEAVEN IS FOR REAL and THE STAR, an animated movie about the birth of Jesus. He also produced the Epiphany Prize® nominee MIRACLES MADE IN HEAVEN, starring Jennifer Garner.

DeVon teased his followers on Instagram about casting.

“Who should play @kirkfranklin??? So far folks have told me @plies @kevinhart4real @jovanadepo. Who do you think??”

According to the Christian Post, Kirk Franklin explained the inspiration behind his latest album’s title, “Long Live Love,” on the popular syndicated radio program “The Breakfast Club”:

“It’s just very obvious where we are, just the climate of culture, just the polarization. Even my Christian brothers even across the aisle and their lack of empathy for black and brown people and not being able to understand that the Creator of love is challenging us to be able to learn how to love people that are not always the most lovable because we’re at times not always the most lovable but then still God is madly in love with us.”

The singer is currently on a 26-city tour that began July 11. He’s also the host of the ninth season of the hit music competition show “Sunday Best,” which returned to BET on June 30.

As of now, details are sparse when it comes to a release and production dates for the biopic.

Other Christian filmmakers are also working on projects about Christian singers. The Erwin Brothers, directors of the Epiphany Prize® winning movie and box office hit I CAN ONLY IMAGINE, just wrapped filming their upcoming project I STILL BELIEVE, which follows the story of recording artist Jeremy Camp and stars country star Shania Twain, movie star Gary Sinise and KJ Apa of TV’s RIVERDALE.
