Candace Cameron Bure Joins Brother Kirk Cameron to Talk Faith, Family and More

Kirk Cameron recently invited his sister and fellow actor Candace Cameron Bure onto his TAKEAWAYS set, which is all decorated for Christmas.

Both Kirk and Candace grew up in Los Angeles, where they were flooded with Hollywood and culture that often rebelled against God.

Candace said that raising her family in that culture was only possible when they kept God at the center of their family. Candace shares three children with her husband, Valeri Bure.

“Los Angeles itself isn’t the most god-seeking city that I know, there’s a lot of of other cities in the U.S that I would find much more open to talking about God and church and all of
those things,” Candace said. “You had to really find stand your ground if that’s what you believed in, just with your own neighbors—that we are God’s children and that God’s the priority in our life.”

She added that consistent prayer and reading God’s word is essential. Candace also said that she had ongoing discussions with her children about why they believe what they believe.

“Spending time to read the Bible as a family and talk about scripture and have conversations and tell the ‘why’ to why we make the decisions we make,” she said of teaching her children. “The ‘why’ is because God says this or the Bible says this and to just keep reiterating that.”

“Be a leader,” she added. “Sometimes being a leader is hard and it means going against the grain, but you have it in you and God’s got you so be strong in that; reinforcing those
verses that say it in the Bible.”

Another challenge that people face today is body image. Candace said that her approach to that also came from scripture when talking to her children.

“I think what I have always stressed to my kids is that God fearfully and wonderfully made you unique,” she said. “He gave you only what you have, and to care for what he’s given you and to nurture all of those things but you can’t compare yourself to other people because God made them different from how he made you. We’re not all to be the same, I think that’s the most important message I’ve taught my kids in regard to that.”

However, Candace also encouraged viewers to turn towards grace when they feel like they have failed or disappointed God.

“When you feel like you’re not connected or you’ve disappointed God in
some way, it’s just hard,” she said. “I’ve really had to learn about grace, that God’s grace is sufficient. I’ve had to learn how to receive his grace and just trust in his word that he says it
I have to believe it.”

“I have to believe it by continually reminding myself of it and going back to that scripture, that is a promise of God. He says it so it’s truth,” she continued. “That gives me peace when I go
back to realize that God is so full of grace. I’m so grateful for it and sometimes I just need to spend a little extra time on that.

“There’s never anything too big that we’ve done, God is such a loving and patient and forgiving God,” she concluded. “He wants a relationship with us… Don’t let those pains of whether it’s shame or disappointment in your life, don’t let them stop you from seeking God because his word says he wants you.”
