Candace Cameron Bure Talks 3 Keys to Resilience

By Movieguide® Contributor

Author and speaker Bianca Juarez Olthoff recently broke down what it means to be resilient on Candace Cameron Bure’s podcast.

Olthoff highlighted three characteristics of a resilient person: perspective, the ability to pivot, and purpose.

“Perspective is an honest acceptance of reality while still maintaining hope,” Olthoff said.

To make her point, Olthoff used holocaust survivors as an example. The ones who survived were not the ones with a delusional sense of reality but the ones who acknowledged reality and had hope.

“The ones who survived were the ones that were like, we may not make it, but we’re gonna find a way to survive every day like it’s our last day,” she said.

“Number two is—[and] this is a hallmark for gritty people—is having a healthy ability to pivot. So a pivot is you’re realizing you’re doing the same thing repeatedly and it’s not working,” Olthoff shared.

“Resilient people look at that and say, what way can I get around it? If I can’t get up over, how can I get around? If I can’t get around, how do I get through? It’s constantly assessing if this isn’t working, how do I find solutions?” she explained.

Returning to the holocaust survivors example for her third point, Olthoff said, “Those that found healing were the ones that somehow made sense of the pain. [They] somehow could look to Yahweh, to look to God and to say, I’m gonna find purpose in the pain, you can take this mess and make it into something beautiful. Those are the three characteristics of the most resilient people.”

Olthoff’s book on resilience, “Grit Don’t Quit: Developing Resilience and Faith When Giving Up Isn’t an Option,” just came out in August.

“Some people think resilience is something only *certain* people are born with. Nope, not true!” Othoff shared about her book on Instagram. “Whether you have prestige or were born in poverty, grit if something YOU can develop. How does it begin? You CHOOSE to get back up.”

Movieguide® previously reported Bure’s faith:

Actress Candace Cameron Bure is known for living out an authentic Christian faith — something that’s generally perceived as a rarity in Hollywood.

Bure has worked and thrived for years in Tinseltown without compromising her values. The actress recently told “The Pure Flix Podcast” that living her beliefs out comes totally naturally.

“My faith is just my life, it’s a part of it. It naturally flows from me, and I feel like I’ve navigated my entire career differently than most people have,” she said. “The goal for me isn’t necessarily the next project or making more money or being a bigger star. I’ve always chosen the things that are true to me and that I’ve wanted to do.”
