Celine Dion ‘Doing Everything to Recover’ After Stiff-Person Syndrome Diagnosis
By Movieguide® Contributor
Grammy Award winner Celine Dion’s sister, Claudette Dion, has updated fans about the singer’s stiff-person syndrome diagnosis.
“She’s doing everything to recover. She’s a strong woman,” Claudette told HELLO! Canada.
“It’s an illness we know so little about. There are spasms — they’re impossible to control. You know people often jump up in the night because of a cramp in the leg or the calf? It’s a bit like that, but in all muscles,” she continued.
“There’s little we can do to support her, to alleviate her pain,” she added with sadness.
But Claudette is hopeful that researchers and experts will be able to find a cure for her sister.
“We’re crossing our fingers that researchers will find a remedy for this awful illness,” she stated.
“Stiff-person syndrome is a neurological disease that causes muscle spasms and rigidity, and also affects a person’s vocal cords and their ability to walk,” Insider reported.
Movieguide® recently reported on Celine Dion’s focus amid her diagnosis:
A source told PEOPLE magazine, “Her main focuses are always her sons and performing. She is the most selfless and considerate person. Céline just loves her boys so much. They are amazing. They give her all the support and love that she needs.”
“They are her light right now,” added the insider.
Dion recently canceled concert dates and the remainder of her tour.
A music source told PEOPLE, “It’s heartbreaking that she has had to cancel touring but she is suffering mobility and other issues from the disease disrupting her daily life. She is doing everything she can while working with doctors because she wants to perform. She has not given up at all. She is hoping to get all of the issues with this disease under control so she can sing again.”
After her diagnosis in December 2022, Dion shared why she canceled her 2023 and 2024 shows.
“I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through,” the singer wrote on Instagram. “It hurts me to tell you that I won’t be ready to restart my tour in Europe in February.”
“Recently, I’ve been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder called stiff-person syndrome, which affects something one in a million people,” she said in the video.
In May, Dion called off the tour for good.
Pray for Dion as she manages her diagnosis and for peace amid the trials.
