Christian Artist Colton Dixon Chooses ‘Faith Over Fear’ in Career, Personal Life
By Movieguide® Contributor
AMERICAN IDOL alum Colton Dixon has been on an emotional roller coaster — from performing in front of thousands to almost losing one of his daughters — but has leaned on his faith regardless the season of life.
A recent nerve-racking experience for Dixon — more than his time on AMERICAN IDOL — was singing the national anthem at a Kansas City Chiefs game at GEHA field. Adding to the apprehension, he knew that pop megastar Taylor Swift would also be in attendance.
“The Chiefs were the hottest thing in the NFL already then you add this to the table. We heard she was going to be there, and she was. I’m happy to say I didn’t faint and I didn’t forget the words. I think that is the most nervous I have ever been in my life. AMERICAN IDOL didn’t touch it,” Dixon told The Tennessean.
That performance was one of the highlights of his career thus far, but the Tennessee native also recounted one of the low points when he was abruptly dropped from his label five years ago.
“That came as quite a shock. I thought we were meeting for lunch to discuss songs. Turns out, it was ‘we are going to drop you,” Dixon recalled.
He shared how his wife Annie helped him remember God’s outlook on the sudden news.
“[Annie] really helped with my perspective on that and even though it felt like a set back in the moment, she said, ‘What if this is actually just God setting you up for what’s next?’” the singer told CCM Magazine. “You know, in order to experience a new season, another season has to die. And there is a transition period that has to take place and pruning season sometimes it has to take place for you to grow to your full potential and that’s the way we looked at it.”
Dixon would soon be signed on with Atlantic Records and released his self-titled album “Colton Dixon.”
“So here we are, new record label. It’s just totally exceeded our expectations and has provided even more opportunity than the last has, and we’re just excited for what the future holds and ready to do whatever He brings our way,” he said.
“We chose to have faith over fear,” he said. “We felt like there was more story to tell on the music side.”
Soon after, he would have to choose “faith over fear” again after complications occurred when Annie gave birth to their daughters Ava Dior and Athens.
“Annie had to have an emergency C-section, and little Dior was first, and she wasn’t breathing. Her pulse had stopped,” the 32-year-old said. “This is not how you want to meet your kid for the first time, but my wife and I were on the same page together and started to pray right there in the OR. She started breathing on her own and has never had a complication since. We are so grateful.”
The “Build A Boat” singer has shared about the power of prayer when trials come like the one he and Annie faced.
“I think so often we think faith as a last resort or prayer as a last resort, and it should be our knee-jerk reaction. [I]f that was the first thing that we ran to…, how different, even if your scenario didn’t look any different, how different would you feel on the inside? [W]ould you have more peace about it? Probably,” he said in an interview with Nicole Crank.
He added, “Even if it doesn’t change anything in the natural like there’s something supernatural happening on the inside of you.”
Movieguide® recently reported on the difficult birth of his twins:
“We never expected our little Ava Dior would arrive in the world without a pulse. In that moment, we had a choice: faith or fear,” Colton told PEOPLE. “We watched and prayed as the doctors and nurses resuscitated our daughter back to life.”
Thankfully, Dior made it through, and is a healthy little baby.
“After several days in the NICU, Dior was able to join us at home, happy and healthy. That was a great day,” he adds. “Life doesn’t always happen the way we want it to, but we believe that life is more about the way we respond to things than what happens to us. We thank God and our amazing doctors and nurses for our two little miracles.”
Dixon is currently joining Jason Crabb for the “Home for Christmas” tour he announced on Instagram:
“I am so excited to announce the Home for Christmas tour! My good friend @jasoncrabbmusic (with my other good friend @cadethompsonmusic filling in on some dates) will be joining me in December. Grab your tickets and bring the whole fam!”
