DANCING WITH THE STARS Lineup Features Multiple Christian Celebs

By Jessilyn Lancaster, Managing Editor

Several self-proclaimed Christians, including Lauren Alaina, Kel Mitchell, and Hannah Brown, will shake, rattle and roll on this season’s DANCING WITH THE STARS.

Alaina got her start on AMERICAN IDOL. Despite her skyrocketing to fame, she clung tightly to her faith for stability.

“The first thing I do every day when I wake up is thank God for letting me make it through the night and giving me another day of life — just because sometimes I wake up and I cannot believe I’m doing what I’m doing. I just thank Him. I don’t know how I deserve it, but it’s completely because of Him. … It plays a big role in my life,” Alaina told CMT.

As of May, Alaina was dating Christian comedian John Crist.

Kel Mitchell of 1990s Nickelodeon fame has also gone on record about his faith.

According to PEOPLE magazine:

In 2004, his hit sitcom Kenan & Kel had been canceled, film work was scarce and his six-year marriage to Tyisha Hampton was ending.

“I felt like I’d hit a wall,” the former teen star said. “I was like, ‘Okay. I need to figure out what I need to do in my life.’ “

Mitchell now calls that time in his life a “confusion moment,” but he has admitted on his blog that he was “suicidal” and “deep in sin” while dealing with his “divorce, drug and alcohol usage … [as well as] the loss of love ones to gang violence, debt, hurt, pain, vanity, lust [and] heartbreak.”

Feeling “lost and looking for answers,” Mitchell tells PEOPLE he returned to the faith that was instilled in him growing up on the South Side of Chicago as the grandson of a pastor.

“I was trying to figure it all out on my own, but what I needed to do was turn to Him,” says the actor, who became the stage manager at a non-denominational Christian church in Los Angeles.

“Once I found that clarity with Christ, I knew everything would work out.”

THE BACHELORETTE’s Hannah Brown rounds out the line-up. Her comments about faith and sexuality triggered shockwaves through the Christian community as she sought love on the latest season of the romantic television show.

This season’s premiere included a scene where Brown prayed, “Lord, bring me your goodness and your love… Help me feel worthy. Help me feel smart.”

Even so, Brown received flack for her liberal views on sexuality. She told another Christian contestant, “I’ve had sex, and Jesus still loves me,” and later spent the night with other contestants in sad contradiction to living in the freedom of God’s grace.

Given that faith was such a strong storyline in THE BACHELORETTE and subsequent headlines, perhaps DANCING WITH THE STARS will also follow suit.
