Danny Gokey knows fear keeps us captive, but the truth and being humble will set us free.
“I think with fear, a lot of what we have is shame attached to it,” the Christian singer and songwriter said in an interview with The Creative House. “One of the things you want to do is you want to run away from shame, because shame just reveals a weakness in you. We can even become arrogant and prideful and blaming.”
Gokey explained that we often justify our mistakes because of our fears.
“I can go back and say, ‘Well, I had fear because of this. I had fear because of this. I had fear because of this,'” he said. “[It’s]…logical, and it makes sense.”
“The hardest thing to do, especially in our society — which is everyone’s voice is loudest, even if they’re wrong — they will justify why they’re allowed to do it.”
He added, “God sets a standard in the word, and we all have to bend to the standard. The word of God is a mirror, and that’s one of the ways that I’m dealing with the Holy Spirit.
Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

God’s word reveals what is in our hearts, and when it convicts us, we should respond in humility.
The AMERICAN IDOL alum continued, “Being honest with myself — humility, you guys, is such a beautiful word. That’s when you know you can change because, like, I need the truth. You recognize telling yourself the truth is the most freeing thing. Jesus said the truth sets you free. The truth about you sets you free, more than anyone else, the truth of being responsible for your own feelings.”
Gokey referenced John 8:31-32, which says, “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'”
The singer often uses his platform to share the freedom he enjoys in Christ with his fans.
Recently, he announced that he will be encouraging others this upcoming Christmas season through his 10th annual “Celebrate Christmas” tour, joined by Natalie Grant.
“We can’t wait to hit the road again this December…Get ready for a special evening of celebrating the season together,” he posted.
Are fear or shame holding you captive? Turn to God, and He will give you freedom.
