Danny Gokey Reflects on ‘Mary, Did You Know?’: ‘Hope of Glory’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Christian artist Danny Gokey is reflecting on the song “Mary, Did You Know?” and the Gospel message behind it.
“I’ve sang this song ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ more times than I can count and it asked the questions ‘Mary, did you know that your son would save our sons and daughters, give sight to a blind man, would calm the storm with his hand?’” he said on Instagram.
“Imagine what it was like in Luke 2:28, ‘When the angel Gabriel came and said, ‘Greetings, you are highly favored. The Lord is with you.’ And then he goes on in the next verses to say that she would give birth as a virgin to the son of God and that His kingdom would never come to an end,” the AMERICAN IDOL alum continued.
“You know as Mary was beginning to learn who Jesus was,” Gokey explained. “There were things that she didn’t understand, like when Jesus said to her, ‘I have to be about my Father’s business.’ Like when Jesus turned water into wine. You know the same process is happening in you and I.”
“When we accept Christ into our life, we are learning that, with Christ in us, it’s the hope of glory,” he added. “The hope of overcoming addiction, the hope of overcoming great loss, the hope of becoming all that God has called us to be. Just like Mary in the Scriptures was learning who this Jesus was, that same Jesus who was in her belly is now in you and I. And he says that we are the head and not the tail, that we are above only and not beneath.”
“As Jesus grew, and Mary learned more & more about who He truly was as the Son of God, there were things that she did not understand, but she believed,” Gokey wrote in the caption. “The same is true with us. The baby that was in Mary’s belly now lives in us. Christ in us, the hope of glory, and the hope of all the things made possible because of Him. The life we live is because of faith in Him who gave Himself for us. When you listen to the songs during this season, be reminded of who He is, and who you are IN and BECAUSE OF Him.”
Gokey is celebrating Christ’s birth through K-LOVE’s “Celebrate Christmas” tour, along with Natalie Grant and Mac Powell.
“Can’t wait to worship Jesus and celebrate the best time of the year with you guys,” he wrote on Instagram.
Movieguide® previously reported on ‘Mary, Did You Know?’:
Singer-songwriter Mark Lowry is sharing the story behind “Mary Did You Know” and what the song has meant to him over the years.
“I’m a one-hit wonder,” Lowry said during an episode of Kirk Cameron’s “Takeaways.” “I’m telling you, if the Lord sat me down and said, ‘Mark, you can leave one thing behind’…I would have chosen this song…”
When asked about the impact “Mary Did You Know” has had on listeners over the years, Lowry said he hopes it “has made them think about Jesus.”
“Because the song really isn’t about Mary,” he explained. “It’s about the baby and what He will do and now, looking back, what He has done,” adding, “I’m just so grateful.”
