SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE and PROJECT HAIL MARY are shoo-ins with moviegoers.

The new Mario Bros. movie has made $628.7 million globally, while PROJECT HAIL MARY has made $510.6 million, Deadline reported this week.

MARIO GALAXY is the second highest MPA movie this year, just behind China’s PEGASUS 3, which it may soon outpace. The movie is the eighth highest-grossing Illumination title of all-time worldwide and the third highest for a pic based on a video game. The first movie made $1.36 billion globally.

“For the film to already be over $300 million is just astonishing,” Paul Dergarabedian, the head of marketplace trends for ComScore, said, noting that the majority of tickets were likely sold at lower prices for children. “To get to these box office milestones is all the more impressive.”

Part of Movieguide®’s review of the family flick reads, “THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is a funny, eye-popping series of rousing set pieces. It has an amazing variety of colorful, fantastic sets and characters.” And it “has a strong moral worldview with some redemptive content.”

HAIL MARY, which is based on the novel by Andy Weir, is officially the highest-grossing Amazon MGM Studios movie ever. It also had the biggest premiere for an Amazon MGM movie with $141 million worldwide, Screen Rant reported. It has a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie is only the fourth non-sequel/non-franchise film to open above $50M abroad, after OPPENHEIMER, F1 and SUPERMAN. It made $30.3 million at Imax alone.

Ryan Gosling stars in the movie with Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, Milana Vayntrub, Priya Kansara, Malachi Kirby, Liz Kingsman, Mia Soteriou and Orion Lee.

Part of Movieguide®’s review of PROJECT HAIL MARY reads, “PROJECT HAIL MARY is a terrific space adventure with lots of humor and heart. It’s a thoroughly uplifting movie with little objectionable content such as two minor references to evolution. Those mentions are counterbalanced by the movie’s Christian title and a lovely reference to God and faith midway in the story, which set the tone for PROJECT HAIL MARY’s exhilarating finish.”

Another family-friendly movie, DETECTIVE CONAN: FALLEN ANGEL OF THE HIGHWAY, has won over hearts, particularly in Japan with $26 million in international sales. Meanwhile, THE DRAMA sits at $62.1M, HOPPERS at $354.4 million and YOU, ME & TUSCANY at $9.1 million on a budget of $18 million.

Both The SUPER MARIO BROS GALAXY MOVIE and PROJECT HAIL MARY will be in theaters for several more weeks.

Movieguide® has proven for decades that movies with more family and faith-oriented themes dominate the box office. When studios listen, they earn back their investment and beyond. Movies like PROJECT HAIL MARY and THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY show just how much families enjoy theaters when they can go together.
