Demi-Leigh Tebow, an author, former Miss Universe, wife of NFL star Tim Tebow and new mom, doesn’t find her identity in the titles the world puts on her.

“It’s easy to believe the labels others give us…but none of them define who we truly are,” she shared on Instagram along with a photo of her speaking on stage.

“The labels others give us, and the ones we place on ourselves, can really stick. But they’ll never tell the whole story,” Tebow continued. “You are not your past, your failures, or the pressure you feel to measure up. Your identity is secure in who God says you are: loved, chosen, and full of purpose. And that will never change!”

People in the comment section expressed their gratitude for the reminder.

“Such a powerful truth,” one user said. Another person added, “Because we should define ourselves in God’s word.”

Identity is a topic so important to Tebow that she wrote a book about it titled A Crown That Lasts: You Are Not Your Label.

In it, she aims to “Relate to the discomfort, confusion, and doubt that arises when you base your confidence on external things, Discover God-confidence when your plans take unexpected detours, Know what do when planted in unknown territory, Use your story to grow an eternal impact, and Stay grounded in the truth of who you are in Christ.”

Tebow opened up on the “Jesus Calling” podcast last year about the moment she realized she put her identity in the wrong thing.

After handing over her Miss Universe crown to the next winner, Tebow admitted she felt empty. “I realized the thing that I forgot, that I left behind alongside my Miss Universe crown, was essentially my identity and the worth and the value that I had placed in something that was temporary, something that was never going to last,” she said.

She also referenced 1 Corinthians 9:25, which says, “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”

“…true worth doesn’t come from titles, accomplishments, or what we ‘show up’ for,” she encouraged in a recent Instagram post, “it comes from who God says we are. That identity can never be taken away!”

Like Tebow, we too can get wrapped up in the labels we — or others — create for ourselves. Ultimately, though, her encouragement is a beautiful reminder that our real identity is found in nothing else but God.
