Jack Black revealed that the biggest regret of his professional career is turning down the role of Syndrome in THE INCREDIBLES because he did not want to work with an unproven director.
“I was offered, and I do regret it, saying no…I was offered Syndrome in that fantastic movie THE INCREDIBLES — one of my favorites of all time, by the way,” Black told Capital FM. “And I said no because I was like, ‘Uhhh, [director] Brad Bird? Never heard of him!’ [I said to him], ‘This character that you’re offering me is like a villain, but he’s kinda one-dimensional. I’m interested but I’d like to see a rewrite. Will you add some dimensions to this character?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, you’re done.’”

“I learned a valuable lesson because when that movie came out, it was one of the best movies ever made,” he added, explaining what he learned from the experience. “I was like, ‘Why was I being so difficult?’”
This lesson has clearly made an impact on Black as he has since starred in a variety of roles that he may have otherwise turned down such as Po in the KUNG FU PANDA series and Steve in A MINECRAFT MOVIE. Instead of caring about who is involved in the project, Black now seems to prioritize the quality of the story.
“We’ve got to work together…There’s so much violence and war and hatred. And that’s what I love about this movie — there’s a lot of love in it and there’s a lot of creativity,” Black told The Hollywood Reporter when explaining why the world needed A MINECRAFT MOVIE last year. “There is some anger and violence too, but in the end it’s about friendship and working together to make [the world] a better place.”
Meanwhile, THE INCREDIBLES remains one of Pixar’s most popular franchises, thanks to its major family focus and theme of sacrifice. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
Beautifully animated, THE INCREDIBLES is full of exciting energy and fantastic fun. Although it’s rated PG because of action violence, it’s also a strong family drama with lots of terrific humor. There are many moral lessons to take away from this redemptive, inspirational movie, which contains a strong Christian worldview. The filmmakers celebrate the good and rebuke the bad. The story and characters are also fully realized. THE INCREDIBLES is the best family film so far this year. Parents, grandparents and children alike will love it.
THE INCREDIBLES is set to receive a third movie, and Pixar is looking at a 2028 release date. While Black would no longer be a part of the franchise either way, as Syndrome died as the end of the first movie, he still wishes he would have taken the opportunity to be a part of this iconic story.
