DirecTV Cuts Back on Satellite Service to Focus on Streaming

DirecTV experiments with cord-cutting as more customers shift to streaming-only; the company just ended satellite service in select areas.

“DirecTV Satellite is not currently available in all areas,” a notice on their website reads. “Check your service address by entering the ZIP code of the address where you want DirecTV service. Want the same package without the satellite? Switch to DirecTV Streaming App now by selecting that option.”

The plan allows new subscribers to sign up for DirecTV’s streaming service — and nothing else. It’s still being tested out in “mostly large cities with robust high-speed internet access,” according to CordCutters News.

“Rural areas with limited broadband availability may still have access to satellite service for new customers, though the company encourages even these users to explore streaming options where feasible,” they added.

This move is part of traditional TV distributors’ fight to stay relevant in the world of streaming, but the jury’s still out on whether or not DirecTV will expand on this plan.

A representative for DirecTV emphasized that this is not a permanent move. In a statement obtained by Variety, they said, “In select markets this limited-time trial will increase awareness and adoption of our satellite-free streaming service, which has quickly become the preferred solution for new consumer customers.”

This is a pretty big cut, but DirecTV is adding plenty to their packages to keep customers interested. The company just struck a distribution deal with Paramount Global that adds their Nickelodeon programming to a new $20/month kids’ bundle.

“DirecTV is a valued partner, and we are pleased to expand our long-standing relationship by featuring our wide array of leading programming in DirecTV’s growing portfolio of Genre Packs,” Ray Hopkins, President of Paramount U.S. Distribution, said of the partnership. “Paramount is committed to exceptional content across broadcast, entertainment, news and sports, and we look forward to continuing to provide additional opportunities for audiences to broadly access and enjoy our fan-favorite programming and brands.”

Rob Thun, the Chief Content Officer at DirecTV, added, “Paramount is one of the world’s most influential programmers, and its broad portfolio – including the CBS Network local stations – provides essential channels to many of our different Genre Packs. Together, these combined services create a strong foundation for a more dynamic TV future, one that gives DirecTV subscribers enhanced choice and control through our industry-leading genre-based options.”

As the world of streaming continues to dominate most people’s TVs, DirecTV’s decision to cut their satellite service is a bold move to fight back.
