Disney Show Reveals Secrets Behind Iconic INDIANA JONES Ride
By Movieguide® Contributor
A new season of Disney+’s BEHIND THE ATTRACTION is taking fans behind the scenes of favorite rides, including the popular “Indiana Jones Adventure.”
The ride takes parkgoers on a trip through a cursed temple, complete with snakes, mummies and collapsing bridges.
The most memorable part is when a large boulder starts rolling towards passengers, only for them to make a speedy escape at the last second. So, how do the riders get away?
“As you come in, we back the room up which makes it seem like you’re going fast,” Disney Legend and Imagineer Tony Baxter said during the episode. “When you get even with Indiana Jones, we reverse the room. That gives you the sense that you backed up.”
Baxter demonstrates how the moving walls work with a scale model in BEHIND THE ATTRACTION, as well as “illustrative graphics” for other components of the ride.
“It was so easy that as you can see here in the model, it’s still revolving and this model is like 25 years old,” Baxter continued. “So that part of this tech is pretty darn good.”
The latest season of BEHIND THE ATTRACTION also takes viewers behind the scenes of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, EPCOT and the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
“One of the things that I love about BEHIND THE ATTRACTION is that it’s a love letter to the many generations of Imagineers, cast members, and everyone who’s put into making what we do over the last almost 70 years,” Jeanette Lomboy, Executive Producer, Creative Ideation, Walt Disney Imagineering, said of the show.
A synopsis of the latest season reads, “BEHIND THE ATTRACTION takes you on a ride behind Disney Parks’ most iconic and beloved attractions. Explore how the Haunted Mansion was filled with 999 happy haunts. When did the Pirates of the Caribbean set sail for Anaheim? How was The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ transformed into Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!? What’s an EPCOT? Meet the Imagineers behind these attractions, as well as the Cast Members who operate them. From Jungle Cruise to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and beyond, Disney parks have amazed millions – and this is the story of how they did it.”
A portion of the Movieguide® review of BEHIND THE ATTRACTION’s first season reads:
BEHIND THE ATTRACTION: Season One is an entertaining, upbeat and well produced documentary series. The episodes have a Romantic worldview overall, where dreams come to fruition and where the parks are expanded based on Walt Disney’s dreams for his amusement parks. However, the episodes have some strong moral elements promoting the importance of taking care of other people and making the amusement parks a positive, fun experience for families. The episodes also contain some positive Pro-American, patriotic content. That said, there are a few scary images, brief occult references and light foul lan-guage in Season One of Disney’s BEHIND THE ATTRACTION. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for children.
