DOWNTON ABBEY Expected to Return for First New Season Since 2015

By Movieguide® Contributor

To the delight of millions, filming for a new season of DOWNTON ABBEY has begun, marking the show’s first season since 2015.

“Filming has been going on for a few weeks now, it is all very, very secret,” a source working on the project told The Daily Mail. “There are people working on it who have seen secrecy like it. [They] have been made to sign non-disclosure agreements so that they don’t give the game away but there is a lot of excitement at the return of DOWNTON.”

“It was such a huge success before and there are so many more stories to be told, it seemed such a shame not to be able to make more of it but they’ve made it happen,” the source continued.

While this is the TV show’s first update since 2015, the series has progressed since then with the release of two movies. These movies have upped the already stellar production value and continued the themes of family and positive references to Christianity.

The new season will pick up where the movies left off, introducing new faces while saying goodbye to some old ones. The showrunners have yet to announce which characters will return; however, they are “thrilled” with the casting.

“It just gives me a lot of pleasure that so many people enjoyed the show,” said creator Julian Fellowes. “So to feel that you created a show that cheers people up and they had a good time with it, I love that.

The show will be created and produced by ITV, which created the original six seasons. While it has yet to be announced how it will air in the U.S., ITV is expected to work with PBS, as it has in the past, to bring the show to its large American audience.

Movieguide® previously reported on DOWNTON ABBEY:

Focus Features announced that the period drama DOWNTON ABBEY is getting a sequel set to release in theaters on Dec. 22. The DOWNTON ABBEY franchise, which originated with the powerhouse TV series, added its first feature-length movie in 2019.

DOWNTON ABBEY 2 will feature the beloved cast of the first movie, including Hugh Bonneville, Jim Carter, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton, and Penelope Wilton. New faces in the second installation include Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, and Dominic West.

Creator Julian Fellows will return to write the screenplay and produce alongside Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge, with director Simon Curtis.

“After a very challenging year with so many of us separated from family and friends, it is a huge comfort to think that better times are ahead and that next Christmas we will be re-united with the much beloved characters of Downton Abbey,” Neame said in a recent release.
