Drew Barrymore’s Talk Show Returns Amid WGA, SAG-AFTRA Strikes

Drew Barrymore announced that her daytime talk show, THE DREW BARRYMORE SHOW, will return for season 4 despite the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Earlier this year, Barrymore stepped away from hosting the MTV Movie and TV Awards to support the strikes.
“I made a choice to walk away from the MTV, film and television awards because I was the host, and it had a direct conflict with what the strike was dealing with which was studios, streamers, film, and television,” Barrymore wrote on Instagram. “It was also in the first week of the strike and so I did what I thought was the appropriate thing at the time to stand in solidarity with the writers.”
However, the actress believes her talk show should return.
“…to be clear, our talk show actually wrapped on April 20th so we never had to shut down the show,” she continued. “However, I am also making the choice to come back for the first time in this strike for our show, that may have my name on it but this is bigger than just me.
“I own this choice. We are in compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind,” Barrymore added. “We launched live in a global pandemic. Our show was built for sensitive times and has only functioned through what the real world is going through in real time.”
Barrymore concluded, “I want to be there to provide what writers do so well, which is a way to bring us together or help us make sense of the human experience. I hope for a resolve for everyone as soon as possible. We have navigated difficult times since we first came on air. And so, I take a step forward to start season 4 once again with an astute humility.”
An anonymous representative for CBS Media Ventures told Deadline, “THE DREW BARRYMORE SHOW will not be performing any writing work covered by the WGA strike.”
However, the show is expected to receive backlash from picketers as filming for the new season begins.
THE DREW BARRYMORE SHOW season 4 will premiere Monday, September 18.
Movieguide® previously reported on Barrymore:
Drew Barrymore recently shared her technology rules for her daughters.
“We watch a ton of movies and shows, so I’m not judging anyone about screens,” the actress told Better Homes & Gardens. “But when it comes to my kids, I’m not a huge fan of personal electronics, like iPads.”
Barrymore recalled that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, her daughters—Olive, 10, and Frankie, 8—were on their electronic devices all day, and the actress “didn’t like it.”
“Now, I keep the iPads locked in a safe, and they only come out for special occasions,” she shared. “I’d rather that the three of us all pile into my bed and watch together.”
