DUNE: PART TWO Reaches Over $600 Million Worldwide
By Movieguide® Contributor
DUNE: PART TWO continues to hold strong as the biggest box office hit for 2024 so far.
According to Slash Film, “Warner Bros. and Legendary production has now amassed $252.6 million domestically to go with $373.7 million internationally for a grand total of $626.3 million. Given that the first DUNE made just over $400 million in its original run, that’s mighty impressive. Not to mention that the IMAX re-release of DUNE brought in more than $30 million earlier this year, bringing that film’s running total to $431 million.”
This means the DUNE franchise has now exceeded $1 billion between DUNE and DUNE: PART TWO.
PART TWO has made its mark overseas. It’s earned $43 million in China, $38 million in the United Kingdom, $31 million in France, $30 million in Germany and $17 million in Australia.
Through its success, director Dennis Villeneuve has established himself as a “big-budget director.”
Timothée Chalamet, who plays Paul Atreides, broke a 50-year record with the movie. Movieguide® reported:
Timothée Chalamet’s latest movies have just broken a record previously set by John Travolta in 1978.
In December 1977, Travolta starred in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER. In July of the following year, he starred in GREASE. The movies were the two top-grossing movies over the eight-month span in which they were released.
Chalamet has now broken Travolta’s record with WONKA and DUNE: PART TWO.
“Since last July, the two movies led by Chalamet are the only ones that have surpassed the domestic $200 million total,” Fox News reported.
PART TWO was supposed to release last fall, but the premiere was pushed back to March 2024 due to the Hollywood strikes.
Collider reported Warner Bros. “pulled out all the stops in its promotions and release strategy for DUNE: PART TWO, which was initially supposed to come out last year, but was delayed because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The film delivered an $82 million opening weekend domestically…It’s the seventh-biggest IMAX release of all time, building upon the nearly $200 million global IMAX gross delivered by Nolan’s OPPENHEIMER.”
DUNE: PART TWO can still be viewed in theaters across the nation.
A piece of Movieguide®’s review reads:
DUNE: PART TWO tells the second half of science fiction writer Frank Herbert’s epic tale of political power, love and desert heroism. After his father was murdered by the evil Baron Harkonnen’s men, Paul and his mother learn the ways of the Fremen the indigenous people on the desert planet of Arrakis. Paul falls in love with a young Fremen women, Chani. Paul helps the Fremen fight for freedom against the Baron. However, he sees a terrible future of a galactic holy war, but can he prevent it while seeking justice for his father?
DUNE: PART TWO is visually stunning. This doesn’t take away from the movie’s epic, dramatic storytelling. In one sense, PART TWO is a love story between Paul and Chani, set against the backdrop of a struggle for freedom. However, DUNE: PART TWO is also a story about good and evil, political power, religion, justice, revenge, and the consequences of wielding power on a worldwide, galactic scale. That said, the movie has some politically correct, direct attacks on religious “fundamentalism” that can be used to attack all religion, but especially Christians and Muslims.
