Emmys Ceremony Moves to 2024 Amid WGA, SAG Strikes

By Movieguide® Contributor

The Emmy Awards ceremony has officially been moved to 2024.

The awards ceremony has been delayed due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which prevent members of those unions from appearing at events where they would promote their work.

Movieguide® previously reported:

Emmy vendors have been told this year’s ceremony will not air on September 18 as planned due to the ongoing WGA and SAG strikes.

“Like the rest of the industry, we hope there will be an equitable and timely resolution for all parties in the current guild negotiations. We continue to monitor the situation closely with our partners at Fox and will advise if and when there is an update available,” the TV Academy said in a statement.

With actors on strike and unable to promote projects, the Emmys ceremony audience would be almost empty if the show went forward as planned. The writers’ strike means anyone writing jokes or monologues for the show’s host and presenters would be crossing the picket line.

The Emmys will now air January 15, 2024, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The delay might be an opportunity for the award show to drum up enthusiasm for the event, which has seen viewership plummet over the last few years.

According to Vanity Fair, the 2022 Emmys’ telecast dropped 24% in ratings, adding, “TV’s biggest night pulled in just 5.9 million viewers, proving to be no match for the Seattle Seahawks versus the Denver Broncos. Meanwhile Monday Night Football had its most-watched game since 2009, with 20 million total viewers.”

One of the reasons many choose not to tune into the Emmys is the show’s emphasis on politics and its continued decision to award immoral content.

“Awards shows have seen declining ratings over the past several years, and it’s clear people just don’t care about what woke Hollywood is doing,” OutKick wrote. “Instead of focusing on entertaining fans, award shows are used as a platform to lecture the middle of America about how awful they are as people.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the Emmys’ decline in viewers:

The Emmys hit an all-time low Sunday, both in viewership and in the series that took home awards.

A mere 6.1 million people tuned in to watch the 2020 Emmys, the lowest number ever, according to Variety.

Likewise, the series that were highlighted and won awards aren’t exactly family friendly.

Zendaya (SPIDER MAN: FAR FROM HOME), who won the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as Rue in HBO’s EUPHORIA, made history as the youngest actress to ever win.

Movieguide® also hasn’t reviewed EUPHORIA, however the series focuses on a group of teenagers dealing with the issues of drugs, sex and violence.

The show contains excessive nudity and pornographic sex scenes, Movieguide® previously reported.
