Facebook Whistleblower To Testify Before Congress, Says Facebook ‘Chooses Profit Over Safety’

By Movieguide® Staff

Facebook came under fire in recent months after the Wall Street Journal published several reports on internal documents that revealed the company’s questionable business model.

Recently, a data scientist named Frances Haugen revealed that she was the whistleblower.

Haugen, who was a previous employee for the big tech company, kept her name anonymous upon the initial release of the documents, which Haugen turned over to both media and federal law enforcement, according to NPR.

However, Haugen confirmed her connection during an interview on a 60 MINUTES segment.

“Facebook over and over again has shown it chooses profit over safety,” Haugen said

NPR reported

Haugen’s document dump, her testimony scheduled in front of Congress this week, and an ongoing investigative reporting series into the company are potentially pushing Facebook into its biggest crisis yet. The negative spotlight also comes as Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill are increasingly scrutinizing Facebook’s actions.

The WSJ articles, based on the internal Facebook documents released by Haugen, addressed several topics like the mental health of teenagers on social media, misinformation regarding COVID-19, and the protection of celebrities who break platform policy.

“I don’t trust that they’re willing to actually invest what needs to be invested to keep Facebook from being dangerous,” Haugen said, referencing the companies lack of active moderators.

After the 60 MINUTES interview, Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal shared on Twitter: “Facebook’s actions make clear that we cannot trust it to police itself. We must consider stronger oversight, effective protections for children, & tools for parents, among the needed reforms.”

Legislation to hold Big Tech accountable has yet to be set in stone. However, an increasing amount of voices are pointing out how Facebook’s lack of accountability has disproportionately affected minors.

“This is your company’s reporting. You knew this was there. You knew it was there, but you didn’t do anything about it,” Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., said.

At the time of the document’s release, Facebook claimed that the WSJ series took the information out of context. However, with Haugen appearing on 60 MINUTES and planning to give her testimony before Congress, new legislation for Big Tech companies could take shape.
