Faith plays a major role in Kansas City Chiefs rookie quarterback Garrett Nussmeier’s life.

The seventh round 2026 Draft pick entered his final season at LSU with an abdominal/oblique injury that likely occurred during a preseason camp.

“Yeah, I mean, it was something that I went through,” he said at the Chiefs’ minicamp last weekend, reflecting on his last season at LSU. “You know, as I said many times before back at LSU, but my first time speaking to you guys, I want you guys to know my faith is a big part of who I am. You know, I’m a huge believer, and I’m a son of Jesus Christ before I’m a football player.”

“And so I believe everything happens for a reason,” Nussmeier continued. “I believe that what I went through last year was meant to be. And so, having gone through that, I’ve grown from it. I’ve become a better player, a better person, a better man. I’m grateful for the struggle. I’m grateful to have gone through that because I know it’s going to help me going forward.”

When Nussmeier was selected by the Chiefs, he was at home surrounded by his family and friends.

He leaned on one particular Bible verse as he patiently waited for his call.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight,” Proverbs 3:5-6 reads.

The athlete’s faith has guided his career since college. In 2024, he explained why he decided to stay at LSU behind 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels for two years.

“When I was making my decision out of high school of where to go to school, I felt like there was a lot of prayer involved, and God brought me to LSU for a reason,” Nussmeier told the media. “I did not feel like it was my time to just pack up and leave. I felt like it was my duty to just keep my head down and trust in His timing and just work. I know God’s timing is always right.”

“I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to step into some pretty tough situations,” the quarterback continued. “I feel like they’ve only made me better as a player. And now getting the experience and the preparation as well as a starter, I think it’ll only help even more…I’ve been thrown into some tough situations, but it’s only made me better and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

With the Chiefs, Nussmeier will be backup to Super Bowl-winning quarterback Patrick Mahomes. But regardless if he plays or not, Nussmeier understands the value of working hard and trusting in God’s timing.
