Waiting can be difficult, and DawnChere Wilkerson knows that all too well. After almost a decade longing for a baby, the pastor learned how to find peace in the waiting by turning to God.

“It’s not about getting what you want, but it really is about experiencing the presence of God right where you are and knowing that you have what you need,” she told Annie F. Downs on the “That Sounds Fun” podcast. “That’s what I’ve experienced in the eight years of infertility that we were waiting.”

Wilkerson admitted that it took her awhile to trust God’s plan, but she finally came to a place of peace with the idea of not having a baby of her own.

“I had to come to a place, and it took me a long time. God’s been so patient with me. He continues to be so patient with me, but after several years of wrestling with it, I got to a place where I’m like, ‘Lord, you’ve healed me. You’ve healed my heart. Whether I have a baby or not, I’ve seen you move over the last few years,'” she said.

She also mentioned that she had “a lot of people to love” and “a lot of people to pour my heart out to.”

Waiting is a part of life and something everyone experiences in some form.

Wilkerson continued, “I really felt like I came to a place where I realized okay, waiting is life. If God chooses to give me a child, then I’m going to be waiting for God to continue to unveil the purpose for that child’s life. There’s going to be tons of trusting moments, tons of times that drive me to my knees where I don’t have the answer.”

She added, “We’re all waiting on something because eternity’s been seated in our hearts, and we have this insatiable longing for that which we can’t see right now.”

This comment refers to Ecclesiastes 3:11, which says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”

God did, in fact, have a plan, and today, Wilkerson and her husband Rich Wilkerson have four beautiful children.

In a sweet Father’s Day post to Instagram, people commented on the beautiful family.

One user said, “I’m in awe how God not only blessed you with one child but many! I’ve been calling your journey and struggle with getting pregnant and so awesome to see how God has blessed you tenfold.” Another person added, “Beautiful fam ❤️.”

Because of her own waiting journey, Wilkerson recently wrote a book called Slow Burn: The Work and Wonder of the Wait.

“More strength, expectation, and patience are within your reach, even amid uncertainty and suffering,” part of its synopsis reads. “Lean into the work of the wait — the constant, steady, slow burn of faith and surrender to your ultimate source. And you’ll discover the wonder of the wait — glimpses of heaven, a perfect love that changes you, and each step celebrated along the way.”

What are you waiting on today? Whatever it is, you are not alone. God makes us wait for a purpose, and even if we don’t get what we hope for, He will give us what we need.
