This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
– 1 John 5:14
Several years ago, I was teaching in Sendai, Japan. On Sept. 1, 2001, I was scheduled to fly from Japan to England to give the keynote speech at a Christian conference there. After my talks were finished, we did not have enough time to take the train to the Tokyo airport so my host decided to drive me the 240 miles.
As we were about to leave, a major typhoon hit Japan. We prayed and decided to continue on to Tokyo in faith for the several hours of driving in treacherous conditions. The well-developed Radio and GPS systems in Japan constantly informed us of the devastations of the typhoon. The freeway was closed all the way to Tokyo except for about 25 miles in front of us and 25 miles behind us. All the way down this bubble of protection surrounded us with sunlight and safety, as a result of God’s grace.
It is clear from many incidences like this that God reigns. Often, however, we do not prevail upon God’s grace because of a lack of faith and even because we feel foolish and chastised by the world for thinking and believing in God’s Providence.
When the Germans were about to overtake the English troops at Dunkirk, the king of England called for national prayer and an incredible wall of fog came in to stop the Germans from seeing and winning the war.
Many instances like this should open our eyes and hearts to pray. It is not how strong our faith is, it is how strong God is. It is better to have little faith and a great God, than great faith and a little god. We are called to exercise our faith.
God will move mountains.
