Want to Stop Wasting Time? Ex Country Star Says Put Your Phone Away
By Movieguide® Contributor
Former country star Granger Smith believes that we are wasting away our time and lives on smartphones.
In a YouTube video, the now-pastor shared his thoughts on the matter.
“I usually encourage…time blocking,” he said in response to a fan wondering about time management. “If you’re feeling like there’s parts of your day that are wasted, I like to think about this. Time block for seven days write things down. Know exactly what you’re doing in each hour of every day…I think…we would all be very surprised at how this turns out. I think you’d be surprised at how much time you have left over.”

“I tell you what I what I think is wasting time, and that is our smartphones. I’m just as guilty as anyone else,” he admitted. “This is the first time in human history that we’ve dealt with this specific problem, being distracted by a metal rectangle that we keep in our pocket that’s constantly giving us notifications, that gives us complete access to the whole world.”
He explained that every time we zone out on our phones, we let our lives waste away.
“Our life is literally passing by, and so much of it is glued to a screen looking at meaningless stuff,” he said.
He explained that he personally keeps his phone on the charger in his closet throughout the day so that he isn’t always around it.
“I believe…if you eliminated half the time you spend on your smartphone, I think you would find a lot of time that you’ve wasted could then be redeemed for new purposes.”
Smith then shared Romans 12:2, which says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
“We need to be aware that we are outside the will of God when we’ve become unconscious,” he added, reflecting on how smartphones turn our brains off. “Smartphones, they are constantly bombarding us with these notifications, the social media, entertainment, drawing our attention away from God, and this this kind…meaningless distraction makes it difficult to discern God’s will.”
Many recognize the damage smartphones cause in their lives. In fact, some members of Gen Z are going back to “dumb phones.”
“I think you can see it with certain Gen Z populations — they’re tired of the screens,” Jose Briones, dumb phone influencer and moderator of the subreddit, “r/dumbphones,” said last year. “They don’t know what is going on with mental health, and they’re trying to make cutbacks.”
