Are we going to get another movie set in the Super Mario Bros. universe? It looks like it!
While the characters the flick will feature haven’t been announced, a report from Universal Pictures International Spain has an “Untitled Illumination/Nintendo Event Film” slated for April 12, 2028, CBR reported.
Many fans speculate that it will focus on Donkey Kong. In 2025, Nintendo and Universal Pictures filed a mysterious copyright listing for an “Untitled Donkey Kong Project.” No releases focusing on the character have been announced, leading fans to believe that he may be the focus of the next movie.
Other guesses put Yoshi in the lead, based on a statement from Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto about the most recent movie, THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE.

“As for Yoshi, I really wanted to include him in the film, but he didn’t have a role in the first film,” he said. “In the first [movie], several Yoshis appeared when Yoshi passed through Yoshi’s Island on his journey to the Jungle Kingdom, and I wanted to use them, so I brought them out as eggs at the end of the previous [movie].”
The upcoming installment isn’t the only exciting news in the Mario Bros. franchise. THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is the most successful release of 2026 so far, and, according to reports, it’s heading to streaming on May 5, though Universal and Illumination have yet to officially confirm.
You can still catch THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE in theaters, too. Fans absolutely love it.
“The animators of Illumination did a wonderful job on Yoshi and on all characters on the movie. He’so cute! And I loved hearing the Overworld theme of Super Mario World,” one person commented on a recent SUPER MARIO GALAXY Instagram post.
Another fan added, “My son LOVED it!!! He noticed a lot of the other character cameos!!”
We’re not surprised that it’s such a hit. Movieguide®’s review praised its “Strong moral worldview with some redemptive content stresses good overcoming evil.”
“THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is a funny, eye-popping series of rousing set pieces. It has an amazing variety of colorful, fantastic sets and characters. There’s some intense action violence, scary moments and scary creatures, however,” the review reads.
Movieguide® continues, “THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE has a strong moral worldview with some redemptive content. It stresses good overcoming evil, helping others and doing the right thing. The movie also promotes strong bonds between sisters and brothers. Finally, Luigi and eventually Mario express love for their enemies. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger and older pre-teenage children because of the intense action violence and scary parts in THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE.”
We can’t wait to see what’s next for the SUPER MARIO BROS. franchise.
