How Al Roker Stays Grounded in His Faith

By Movieguide® Contributor

In a recent interview, Today anchor Al Roker shared the best advice he’s ever gotten and what he does the stay grounded in his faith.

During the interview with Guideposts, Roker explained that he received great advice from Willard Scott, the Today weatherman that Roker took over for when he joined the show. “Always be yourself,” Scott told Roker. “People can do whatever they want, but they can’t take that from you. Everybody wants to be somebody else; just be you.”

Along with his family and his career, Roker puts a lot of value on his faith. During the interview he shared that he journals everyday as a way to keep himself grounded and express gratitude every day. He also likes to escape to  his house in upstate New York whenever he can get out on the lake and just sit and have peace away from all the hustle and bustle of New York City.

Willard also taught Roker about, “‘never give[ing] up your day job.’ People always have these side hustles, and that’s great, but remember where you really make your money and where you find the most joy.”

While Roker loves his job and is always aching to get back on-air when he has to step away from the show, he keeps his family at the center of his life.

The hardest thing that Roker ever had to do was let his kids grow up. “When you’re used to being responsible for them and then they have to go out there and be responsible for themselves, you know they’re going to make mistakes and there are going to be issues. You want to fix everything, but you can’t do that. That’s really hard,” he explained.

As much as he loves his kids, his wife is really his rock, and someone that he views as a hero in his life. “[My wife] has raised three kids. She’s had a demanding career. She’s got a difficult husband. (Ha!) She does it with grace and humor and a firm hand on the tiller. If it wasn’t for her, medical stuff aside, after this last medical issue that I’ve had, I don’t think I’d be here.”

Movieguide previously reported on Roker when he made a surprise return to Today following knee replacement surgery:

TODAY anchor Al Roker recently made a surprise return to Studio 1A after missing shows during his recovery from knee surgery.

Roker has been off the air for weeks, taking it easy at home after his total knee replacement surgery. However, it looks like the morning show star is just as anxious to be back at TODAY as his fans are!

During a segment on a recent episode, Roker shocked co-hosts Craig Melvin, Dylan Dreyer, and Sheinelle Jones by suddenly appearing in the studio with a loud laugh. All three were quick to give Roker big hugs.

“Al Roker, he just shocked us with a little surprise pop-in,” Melvin announced. “We weren’t expecting that — clearly.”

Roker talked more about his procedure on another episode of TODAY, telling his co-hosts, “I’m going to be honest. I’ve had a number of body replacements. It’s not a big surprise, [but] this one has been the toughest one yet.”

He will be returning to the TODAY show sometime next week.
