How God Used ‘Irrelevant’ 49ers QB Brock Purdy for His Glory
By Movieguide® Contributor
Tim Tebow and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy discussed him being the last pick of the draft and how God is using that fact to bring greater glory to Himself.
“It always irritates me and it gets under my skin a little bit when they all refer to you as Mr. Irrelevant, but I feel like God has used that in your story because if you weren’t the last pick in the draft, not as many people [would be talking about it],” Tebow said to Purdy. “Nobody talks about the 17 picks before you. They don’t know that; they know you because you were the last pick, and look at what you have done.”
“I’ll say this, I think God has used you being the last pick as a bigger story, as a bigger testimony than if you got picked earlier,” Tebow continued. “In my opinion, now sitting back, I see that as grace. God is saying, all these people are…saying ‘irrelevant,’ watch how relevant he is to me. Watch how relevant his story is to me.”
By all means, Purdy should have never been an NFL star. He was the 49er’s third-string quarterback with two strong players ahead of him in the lineup. However, after both of those players got injured, he was given the opportunity to lead his team.
Purdy exceeded all hopes and went undefeated through the final games of the regular season, with the 49er’s playoff run only ending after Purdy suffered an injury, leaving them without a quarterback. That story already put Purdy on sports fans’ radar and gave him the platform to share his faith. However, last season, Purdy proved his success wasn’t a fluke when he led his team to the Super Bowl.
Though Purdy still struggles with being the last pick of the draft, he is thankful for the chance to prove himself and the opportunity to point to the Lord through his success.
“It’s like, I want to know why, you know, why did I get drafted last?” Purdy said. “But I’m so grateful for being drafted last and for Him to be able to choose me to have this kind of story — for my glory? No. For His glory, like, that’s what brings me joy.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Purdy:
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy returned to the field after elbow surgery to compete against the Pittsburgh Steelers in a week one game.
Before his return, Purdy spoke to SportsSpectrum to discuss his mindset throughout his recovery.
“I think the first thing really is just, obviously, being thankful for just the little things, the moments and being present with where God has me,” Purdy told Sports Spectrum. “Not trying to get caught up in timelines of what my future looks like and ‘Oh, I did this last year, so I deserve this.’”
“For me it’s, ‘No, God has me where He needs me,’ and, ‘How can I look around and be thankful for where He has me and just have that steadfastness and peace and love, obviously that He provides, and stay in that?’” he added.
