How PIONEER WOMAN Ree Drummond Convinced Erin and Ben Napier to Star in Christmas Movie

By Movieguide® Contributor

HGTV stars Erin and Ben Napier just made their movie debut, but they were initially unsure about starring in a movie. However, one HGTV co-star managed to convince them to say yes.

The Napiers appear in the Discovery+ movie A CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE. Movieguide® previously reported on the movie:

A CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE follows Katie and David as they attempt to fix up Katie’s mom’s house and sell it — something the Napiers have tons of experience with.

The couple play Henry and Sarah Wright, a master carpenter and artist, respectively. The characters they played are very similar to the Napiers in real life, and Erin shared that the Wrights say “the same things we would normally say.”

Erin and Ben are excited for the movie to premiere, but admitted they weren’t sure about being in a movie when it was first offered.

Fellow TV host Ree Drummond was actually the one who talked the Napiers into doing the movie. She appeared in last year’s CANDY COATED CHRISTMAS.

“[Drummond] said it was one of the most fun things she had ever done,” Erin shared. “She said we had to do it and said we would love it. So, we said, ‘OK, great, we will do it.’”

“It was a lot of fun,” Ben added. “It was very different from the way we normally shoot.”

Drummond recently made headlines for sharing details about her foster son, Jamal, who just turned 18. Movieguide® previously reported:

PIONEER WOMAN star Ree Drummond recently opened up about her foster son, Jamar, who is now 18.

“That’s really the first time that I’ve introduced Jamar to the world,” the celebrity chef said, referencing his inclusion in her new book of essays, Frontier Follies. “He’s been living with us for about a year and a half.”

Drummond said: “[Fostering] wasn’t really anything my husband and I sought out to do or necessarily felt called to do.”

However, the couple is excited about their life with Jamar and his future.

“He’s basically been a full-fledged part of our family for over a year and a half,” Drummond said.

Although Jamar lived with Drummond’s family for over a year, she noted that she had to avoid a public announcement “because of regulations with the state agencies.”

Drummond continued: “Also, I was pretty protective of him, and I didn’t want to just suddenly put him on my social media and put him in the public life. He’s 18 now and he started sort of saying ‘I feel like you’re hiding me from the world,’ so once he turned 18, I felt like it was time to share and he’s very happy to have his story told.”

The couple have been talking about their movie experience on Instagram, too. Ben posted some behind-the-scenes photos from the set.

“Check out the stars of the movie I got to be in!” he captioned his post. “@thekatiestevens, @erinapier, and @victorrasuk along with the crew all did such an impressive job, I’m happy they put up with me.”

He continued, “It was fun pretending to be an actor for a week. If you love Christmas movies, then you’ll love this movie! If you don’t love Christmas movies then we can’t be friends.”

Erin posted a trailer for the movie, writing, “It’s a renovation story within a love story within a Christmas story (and it honestly looks pretty cute.)”

The movie is now available on Discovery+. Movieguide® has not reviewed it yet, and cannot advise on its content.
