LORD OF THE RINGS star Viggo Mortensen was pleased to learn that Jamie Dornan will play the role of Aragorn in THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM.
“I really, really don’t want to go into it right now because I do want to save that for, you know, further down the line,” HUNT FOR GOLLUM director Andy Serkis said on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast when discussing the role of Aragorn. “I’m gonna save all discussion about casting. Other than that we are thrilled that Jamie’s doing it. I mean, we’re, you know, we’re absolutely thrilled. And, by the way, so is Viggo.”
“Oh, good, seal of approval, that means a lot,” podcast host Josh Horowitz said, as Serkis added, “100 percent.”

In addition to directing the movie, Serkis will reprise his role of as Gollum, which he played in Peter Jackson’s LOTR and THE HOBBIT trilogies, Entertainment Weekly reported. Ian McKellan will return as Gandalf, while Elijah Wood will play Frodo again. Lee Pace reprises Thranduil. Newcomers to the LOTR universe include Kate Winslet as Marigol and Leo Woodall as Halvard, along with Dornan as Aragorn/Strider.
Jackson, who originally adapted J.R.R . Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books in the early 2000s, serves as a producer for THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM.
“The Gollum/Sméagol character has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, whilst his Sméagol side is, arguably, quite sympathetic,” Jackson told Deadline. “I think he connects with readers and film audiences alike, because there’s a little bit of both of them in all of us. We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films. It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from Professor Tolkien.”
THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM’s story comes from Tolkien’s footnotes and is set between THE HOBBIT and THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING. According to Deadline, it follows “Aragorn’s perilous quest to capture Gollum before the creature can reveal the Ring’s location to Sauron.”
Philippa Boyens, HUNT FOR GOLLUM producer and co-writer, said the movie will only add depth to the beloved franchise.
“We don’t want this film to be is just the film in the trilogy. This film has to work in its own way. And that’s our job,” she said. “That’s what we are going to have to be able to do. I know there’s plenty of people out there who will be like, oh no, why are they doing this? Why are they going back in? Well, that’s our job, to prove why we think that it’s a good idea.”
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM is set to release in theaters Dec. 17, 2027.
