James Van Der Beek’s daughter Emilia recently shared a heartfelt video about her father’s death, telling followers he is now “with God.”
“As you will probably know, my dad has passed away,” the 9-year-old said in a video posted to her mother Kimberly’s Instagram page.
Van Der Beek passed away in February after a battle with Stage 3 colorectal cancer. He was 48.
Emilia said she wanted to share some “little tips” for anyone else who might be struggling with the grief of losing a loved one, including “talk[ing] to them.”

“I just tell him about my day, how I’m feeling, and I told my family how I’m feeling. And I know he can hear me, but I can’t hear him,” she shared. “You have to feel them in your heart, because they’re in your heart. They’re watching over you. They’re a part of your body and in a good place.”
Emilia continued, “I know that my dad’s in a good place. He’s not in pain anymore. He’s in heaven above the clouds with God and the Lord.”
“Something my dad told me was if this doesn’t work out the way he wanted it to and the way we wanted it to for him living, I still have to believe in miracles. Miracles can still happen, just later on in life, and they’ll keep coming,” she concluded.
Kimberly also recently shared some memories of Van Der Beek on what would have been his 49th birthday.
“I’m missing you tremendously,” she wrote in an Instagram story. “You were the best humanity had to offer. This is the loss I don’t know how to process. I will love you forever.”
Van Der Beek’s longtime DAWSON’S CREEK co-star Joshua Jackson also reflected on the loss of his friend and coworker, telling TODAY, “I think it hits in a variety of different ways. For me as a father now, I think the enormity of that tragedy for his family hits me in a very different way than just as a colleague. So I think the processing is is ongoing.”
“He and I shared this very amazing time…and it was formational for us,” Jackson said. “I know both of us look back on that time with great fondness, but I will also say that I know that I’m really just a footnote in what he actually accomplished in his life.”
He continued, “He became what we used to just call a good man, a man of the kind of belief, the kind of faith that allowed him to face the impossible with grace, an unbelievable partner and husband, just a real man who showed up for his family and a beautiful, kind, curious, interested, dedicated father.”
Continue to keep Van Der Beek’s family and friends in your prayers.
