Jamie Foxx will unveil the mystery surrounding his sudden health issue last year in his new Netflix special, WHAT HAD HAPPENED WAS…
“In April 2023, the Oscar and Grammy winner was sidelined by a sudden, serious medical complication and hospitalized in Atlanta,” Variety reported Nov. 1. “An official cause for the emergency has yet to be disclosed, though Foxx has alluded to the severity of his condition in the months since. Most recently, he revealed (via Art of Dialogue) that it started with a ‘bad headache,’ but then he was ‘gone for 20 days’ and woke up with no memory of what happened.”
Except for these few details, the star’s fans have been kept in the dark about what exactly happened to Foxx.
At the African American Film Critics Association Awards this year, Foxx announced that he’d soon share the details of his medical issues with everyone but in “a funny way.”
“We’re gonna get back to the stand-up sort of roots,” the actor-comedian said about the special, which premieres Dec. 10 on Netflix.
This is Foxx’s first comedy special in 21 years. He performed the special over three nights in Atlanta last month and received many well-wishes from his audience. Netflix bought the rights to the special.
“I said, ‘If I can stay funny, I could stay alive’…I’m back,” Foxx said in a teaser video.
“The special is directed by Hamish Hamilton and executive produced by Foxx, Datari Turner, Marcus King, James Longman, Raj Kapoor, Hamilton and Katy Mullan. WHAT HAD HAPPENED WAS… is produced by Foxxhole Productions and Done + Dusted,” Variety said.

Foxx, who is a Movieguide® Teddy Bear and Grace Award® winner, will also make another appearance on Netflix in January with his movie, BACK IN ACTION. Foxx was filming the movie at the time of his medical emergency, which delayed production. Foxx returned to set in January of this year. The BEAT SHAZAM host also had to be temporarily replaced on his show at the time of the emergency.
Part of the logline for Foxx’s new action-comedy movie reads, “Years after giving up life as CIA spies to start a family, Emily and Matt find themselves dragged back into the world of espionage when their cover is blown.”
