HGTV Star Shares Election Day Reminder: ‘God Is In Control’
By Movieguide® Contributor
In her latest Substack post, HGTV star Jenny Marrs is encouraging readers to lean on God during this election season.
“I sat with God this morning and handed him my anxiety and my scrolling and my headline-scanning and my listening to the arguments of both sides,” she wrote. “I’ve tried to suppress it for a few weeks now but the truth is: the upcoming election has me unsettled. I think most of us can feel the tension, the strife, the division in the air. It seems more passionate, more angst-driven than ever before. We are a land divided where friendships and families have been broken over political stances.”
Marrs shared that, after all this, she checked the GPS tracker app for the family’s livestock guardian dogs.
“Then, I read the 34th chapter of Ezekiel,” she continued. “As I read about the abandoned sheep who were left to be attacked by every wild animal (Ezekiel 34:8), I thought back to the spring of 2020 when we lost five sheep due to predator attacks.”
Marrs continued, “Through those losses, I learned a few things…We have a very real enemy who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy…The enemy thrives on division. Unity is a defense against his attacks.”
“We have a good Shepherd,” she concluded. “Our God watches over us and He never sleeps or slumbers.”
Marrs drew parallels between God and Jack, one of the livestock dogs — “Jack ‘roamed’ 9 miles in order to keep his sheep safe. He didn’t rest. He never let down his guard. He was always on alert…Now, I’m in no way saying my dog, Jack, is like God. But, I do believe the Holy Spirit led me to my tracking app this morning as a reminder. God never sleeps, He is always on alert. He knows what enemies lurk around us. He knows what is in store in the morning when we awaken. He alone can provide us the gift of peace. We need not be afraid.”
She also shared some verses from Ezekiel, including 34:31 — “You are my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”
“If you are feeling anxious this weekend leading up to Tuesday, rest in the fact that at this very moment, rest in the fact that at this very moment, I’m watching my sheep graze contentedly in the pasture without fear of the future despite the attacks of the past,” Marrs wrote. “They had no idea Jack was out there all night, keeping them safe. Just like we have no idea the ways in which God is working. But we do know this: God is in control today and will be on Tuesday and on Wednesday and on the day after that and on the day after that. We can turn off the news and enjoy His peace (and, in turn, be peacemakers to those around us).”
While most know Marrs from her hit HGTV show, FIXER TO FABULOUS, she is also a writer and has been sharing her gifts through her Substack newsletter.
“Journaling is how I process the world around me and name the ways God is actively working in my life,” Marrs wrote in her initial post. “Which brings me to this platform, I’ll take up the act of online journaling once again. I’ll use this space to record and remember. I hope you’ll join me here as I process the world and the ways I see God working in it.”
