Pop Star Celebrates 7 Years Sober: ‘Walked Myself Into the Light’

Pop star Jessica Simpson is celebrating seven years of sobriety in a new Instagram post.
“7yrs ago today I walked myself into the light of being alcohol free,” she captioned a black and white selfie.
Simpson has been open about her struggles with alcohol abuse. A 2021 post included a photo of her the day she decided to stop drinking, which the singer called “an unrecognizable version of myself.”
“I knew in this very moment I would allow myself to take back my light, show victory over my internal battle of self respect, and brave this world with piercing clarity,” she wrote in the caption. “Personally, to do this I needed to stop drinking alcohol because it kept my mind and heart circling in the same direction and quite honestly I was exhausted.”
Simpson continued, “There is so much stigma around the word alcoholism or the label of an alcoholic. The real work that needed to be done in my life was to actually accept failure, pain, brokenness, and self sabotage. The drinking wasn’t the issue. I was. I didn’t love myself. I didn’t respect my own power. Today I do. I have made nice with the fears and I have accepted the parts of my life that are just sad. I own my personal power with soulful courage. I am wildly honest and comfortably open. I am free.”

Simpson is currently hard at work on a variety of different creative projects, including recording new music.
“Writing music has become a beautiful therapeutic thing for me that I didn’t know was so natural, but it’s because I haven’t done it in so long,” she said in an interview with Footwear News. “It’s just nice to know that I’m meeting myself back in this place, as a woman, and after going through everything that I’ve been through in my life.”
Simpson relocated to Nashville to work on her new music and shared that her kids say she’s “so happy” there.

“I am very humbled to team up with Gunpowder & Sky and Van Toffler, who has been a longtime collaborator and supporter of mine, to make a documentary series that is entirely real, raw and more personal than anything I have done before,” she said in a press release about the project.
