Though he announced he would likely retire from acting, Jim Carrey might now lead a live-action movie based on THE JETSONS, which would mark as his second project since intentionally slowing down his career.
“Well, I’m retiring,” Carrey said two years ago. “Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
“I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas,” the actor continued. “I really love my spiritual life and I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

Since then, Carrey has received at least one script that was good enough to bring him back to the big screen. That movie was SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3, which gave audiences with an extremely entertaining story that was also grounded in very strong morals. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
A flashback about Shadow interrupts the story in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3. However, the flashback gives the movie a heartwarming twist. Also, the twist plays a major role in the movie’s spectacular, exciting, uplifting, redemptive ending. Thus, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 has a strong moral, redemptive worldview. It overtly promotes family, adoption, love, sacrifice, making good choices, and doing the right thing. The movie also has a positive reference to God and a beautiful sentiment about light overcoming death. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 provides plenty of thrills, laughs and heartwarming moments. Caution is advised for some violence and five relatively light expletives.
The live-action THE JETSONS may prove to be the second movie that entices the actor out of retirement as he is reportedly in talks to lead the story.
THE JETSONS first aired in 1962 and was an animated sitcom taking place in a futuristic sci-fi world – serving as a space-age equivalent of THE FLINTSTONES. The show has maintained a strong audience despite airing its last episode in 1987, receiving multiple movies since then. The most recent movie was released in 1990, though this new live-action movie has been in development for at least a decade.
While THE JETSONS continues to be a recognizable franchise, it would certainly benefit from adding Carrey to help draw in a new audience. Furthermore, Carrey has had success translating an animated character into a live-action format. Most notable was his portrayal of The Grinch which rivals that of his animated counterpart.
Whether Carrey will return from retirement again to lead this story has yet to be seen, but if he does, fans can be sure it will be a movie worth watching as he has committed to only returning for high-quality movies.
